AI Business Analyst (Associate), Information Technology

Level: Associate

Location: New York, NY (hybrid)

Job Description

If you are passionate about shaping the future of technology and making a meaningful impact in financial services, we want to hear from you. Moelis is seeking a technical, detail-oriented Business Analyst (Associate) who thrives at the intersection of business strategy and technology execution. This is a hands-on role designed for someone who excels at collaborating with diverse stakeholders, translating complex requirements into actionable plans, and delivering innovative, high-impact solutions.

As an AI Business Analyst, you will be a key contributor in building and scaling an AI platform designed to equip the business with tools to unlock more productivity and revenue growth. Your work will drive meaningful business impact and help define Moelis’s target state. In this role, you’ll act as the critical link between technical capabilities and business objectives, translating requirements, evaluating use cases, and ensuring seamless alignment between IT delivery teams and front-office, middle-office, and support functions.

As part of a lean, high-impact team, you will have significant early responsibility and direct exposure to senior leadership. You will collaborate closely with business users, data scientists, and engineers to design and implement AI-driven solutions that transform how the firm operates. You will identify business opportunities, gather and document requirements, and develop workflows across platforms. This role combines product strategy, solution architecture, stakeholder engagement, and process optimization. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong technical skills, someone who can turn complex ideas into scalable, practical enterprise solutions that deliver measurable impact.

Why this Role Exists

Moelis is evolving its AI strategy to drive productivity, efficiency, and growth. Our vision is to deliver governed, banker-grade analytics and agentic capabilities across the firm. To achieve this, we need an Associate who can:

  • Connect evolving business needs with AI and automation capabilities

  • Lead requirements and solution design for priority AI use cases

  • Help ensure that deployed solutions are adopted, measured, and compliant with controls

If you can turn ambiguous, complex business requirements into clear, data-informed process flows and scalable AI solutions, we’d like to speak with you.

Key Responsibilities

Co-Lead Stakeholder Collaboration

  • In partnership with the AVP on the team, you will partner with business stakeholders and IT teams to identify, qualify, and prioritize AI opportunities that enhance decision-making, accuracy, and efficiency.

  • Facilitate workshops, structured interviews, and working sessions with bankers and support functions to understand workflows, pain points, and desired outcomes.

  • Act as a trusted bridge between technical teams and business users, ensuring clear communication and alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to cross-functional teams and management, tailoring message and detail to the audience.

Requirements Gathering & Execution

  • Own the end-to-end requirements process for assigned AI initiatives, from discovery through sign-off.

  • Document and refine business requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria for AI-driven solutions.

  • Create and maintain artifacts such as process maps, swim lane diagrams, data flow diagrams, and use-case briefs.

  • Translate complex business needs into actionable technical deliverables for engineering and data science teams and support backlog prioritization in Agile ceremonies where applicable.

Solution Design & Implementation

  • Analyze existing business processes and data flows to identify bottlenecks, manual work, and automation opportunities.

  • Design workflows and process flows that align business use cases with AI capabilities (e.g., generative AI assistants, intelligent document processing, AI agents).

  • Collaborate with data scientists and engineers to prototype, test, and deploy AI solutions, providing structured feedback and ensuring business requirements are met.

  • Coordinate and support user acceptance testing (UAT), including test case definition, execution tracking, and defect triage.

  • Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals, controls, and standards.

Measurement, Governance, and Risk

  • Define and track KPIs and success metrics for AI use cases (e.g., time saved, accuracy improvements, revenue enablement, error reduction).

  • Analyze usage patterns, performance metrics, and business outcomes from deployed AI tools; synthesize insights into clear recommendations.

  • Support documentation related to model behavior, data lineage, controls, and explain ability in partnership with risk, legal, and compliance teams.

Thought Leadership & Enablement

  • Research emerging AI technologies and platforms, especially generative AI, large language models, and workflow automation tools, and assess their applicability to investment banking workflows.

  • Benchmark Moelis initiatives against external market trends and best practices in AI for financial services.

  • Contribute to internal best practices, playbooks, and templates for AI business analysis.

  • Help develop training materials, demos, and change management plans to drive adoption and AI literacy across the firm.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, with preferred emphasis in Information Systems, Data Science/Analytics, Computer Science, Finance or related field

Professional Experience

  • 3+ years of experience as a Business Analyst or similar role

  • Experience within financial services industry preferred, however, candidates from all backgrounds will be considered

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to turn qualitative and quantitative data into clear insights and action.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, including building structured analyses and executive-ready presentations.

AI, Data, and Technical Skills

  • Experience working with Python (and ideally SQL or data analytics tools such as Power BI or Tableau) to explore data, run analyses, or prototype solutions.

  • Familiarity with generative AI tools, large language models, or automation platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Power Automate, UiPath) and an understanding of how they can be embedded in business workflows.

  • Understanding of core software delivery concepts (e.g., Agile, backlog management, UAT, release planning).

Leadership & Ways of Working

  • Proactive, self-starter with a growth mindset, comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment with shifting priorities.

  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills; able to manage multiple initiatives, deadlines, and stakeholder groups.
