About the role
MSS Security is seeking a dedicated After Hours Duty Officer (AHDO) to provide safety, security, and pastoral care support to university student residents in Newcastle.
While employed by MSS Security, AHDOs operate as an extension of the University’s Student Living Team, playing a critical frontline role supporting residents outside normal business hours.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Responding to medical, fire, and security emergencies
Acting as first responder to incidents involving intoxication, mental health crises, threats of self-harm, and disclosures of sexual violence
Providing First Aid and coordinating emergency services as required
Conducting patrols to ensure buildings and residents are safe and secure
Monitoring access to accommodation buildings
Mediating resident conflicts and enforcing accommodation policies
Completing incident reports and preparing detailed shift handover notes
Providing support and referrals to students experiencing personal or academic challenges
Assisting with after-hours check-ins and check-outs
Identifying and reporting maintenance issues
Skills and Experience
Current NSW Security Licence (essential)
Current First Aid Certificate (essential)
Strong communication and conflict resolution skills
Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations
Empathetic and community-focused approach
Ability to work independently across day, evening, and overnight shifts
