What does a successful Mainframe Modernization Engineer do at Fiserv?

We are looking for a Mainframe Modernization Engineer to drive the transformation of legacy IBM mainframe development and operations into a standardized, modern, and AI Driven delivery model. Standardizing on VS Code + Zowe Explorer with AI assistance and integrating Endevor, DB2, JES, Control‑M, FileMaster, CA‑View and SonarQube to enable in‑IDE debugging and CI quality gates is needed from Mainframe Modernization Engineer.

What you will do:

• Modernize mainframe development by standardizing on VS Code with Zowe Explorer
• Integrate core mainframe systems into a unified development and delivery workflow, including: Endevor, DB2, JES, Control‑M, FileMaster, CA‑View
• Enable in‑IDE development, debugging, job monitoring, and operational visibility
• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines with built‑in quality gates using SonarQube
• Improve code quality, delivery speed, and release predictability across the SDLC
• Capture production telemetry across batch jobs, scheduling, and databases
• Implement predictive monitoring to:

• Identify potential SLA breaches before they occur
• Detect anomalies early
• Correlate root causes across jobs, schedules, and data layers

• Reduce incident impact through automated runbooks and integration with incident‑management systems
• Drive measurable improvements in MTTD, MTTR, SLA compliance, and operational stability
• Reduce development and operational costs by:

• Optimizing the developer work environment
• Enabling junior developers to deliver faster using standard frameworks and automation

• Document modernization patterns, operational processes, and best practices
• Partner with development, QA, and operations teams in an Agile SDLC model

What you will need to have:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 9–11 years of Strong experience with IBM mainframe systems
• Hands‑on expertise in COBOL, JCL, and SQL
• Solid understanding of Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
• Experience working with mainframe tools such as Endevor, DB2, JES, Control‑M, FileMaster, and CA‑View
• Experience with Git and CI systems (GitLab CI, Jenkins) and basic pipeline authoring.
• Working knowledge of Docker and basic Kubernetes concepts (pods, services).
• Comfortable working in an Agile environment with strong communication skills.
• Production support experience, including job monitoring, incident response, and root‑cause analysis
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively across development, QA, and operations teams

What would be great to have:

• Experience modernizing large‑scale legacy mainframe environments
• Exposure to cloud or hybrid modernization initiatives
• Experience reducing dependency on senior specialists through automation and standardization
• Background in financial services or large enterprise environments
• Understanding of security scanning, SCA and automated compliance checks.

AI-enabled skills:

• Experience or strong exposure to applying AI for analysis such as Anomaly detection, SLA risk prediction, Root‑cause correlation.
• Ability to use AI‑assisted tools to improve productivity while ensuring accuracy and control
• Understanding of how AI can reduce reactive monitoring and operational toil
• Familiarity with developer AI assistants (GitHub Copilot or equivalent) to speed routine scripting and documentation while verifying outputs before use.
• Use AI tools to generate pipeline templates and draft runbook content responsibly.
