What’s the role

The Advanced Fuels Project Lead will be responsible for conducting end‑to‑end techno‑economic assessments across a portfolio of low‑carbon fuel pathways, from early conceptual definition and process modelling through to economic evaluation and decision‑support for business stakeholders. The role requires close collaboration with researchers, process engineers, technology developers, and commercial teams to ensure technical quality, coherence of assumptions, and transparent translation of results into Shell’s strategic options. The selected candidate will engage with internal Shell Experts to validate methodologies. The successful candidate will typically oversee and contribute to 6–10 technology projects.

1. Technology Theme Development and Assessment

  • Oversight and management of budget expenditure for projects delivered under his/her responsibility, guaranteeing the Levy compliance.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to identify key technology themes of strategic importance to the Low-Carbon Fuels (LCF) business and which can be developed through externally funded R&D projects.

  • Plan, facilitate and participate in technology workshops and other stakeholder events to develop an in-depth understanding of the technology challenges and opportunities facing LCF and potential routes to solutions.

  • Lead Techno‑Economic Assessments (TEA) for emerging and advanced fuel pathways, including SAF, green/renewable diesel, hydrogen, e‑fuels, and biomass‑derived intermediates.

  • Develop and optimize detailed process models in Aspen Tech (or similar simulators), ensuring robust mass & energy balances and rigorous thermodynamic property selection.

  • Translate process simulation outputs into scalable cost models, including CAPEX, OPEX, sensitivity analyses, and uncertainty quantification.

  • Assess feedstock‑to-fuel pathways, identifying technical bottlenecks, scale‑up barriers, integration opportunities, and overall commercial viability.

  • Benchmark novel technologies against conventional processes to support go/no‑go decisions, portfolio prioritization, and strategic roadmaps.

2. Proposal Management

  • Align the projects under her/his responsibility with third parties with Shell Strategy

  • Develop and make recommendations with respect to optimisation of its portfolio through value analysis, maximising R&D levy qualification and value delivered, building relationships with strategic partners, creating value for Shell and guaranteeing the real translation of the benefits to the company

  • In conjunction with internal and external stakeholders review and rank project proposals in line with the Low-Carbon Energy Programme strategic requirements, with particular focus on the assessment of business value to Shell and project risk management and mitigation.

  • Liaise with potential partners to ensure a common understanding of the technologies to be developed and provide technical support to the development of cooperation agreements to the strategic benefit of Shell.

  • Undertake the necessary due diligence and develop the necessary materials to take projects through the appropriate internal sanction process and provide the required technical and project management input to the finalisation of contracts with supplier(s)

3. Project Management

  • Provide project management expertise to ensure effective and timely delivery of Technology projects.

  • Set, agree and monitor performance standards for projects ensuring compliance especially HSSE and Ethics & Compliance standards/policies relevant to the R&D activities undertaken by suppliers and Universities.

  • Work closely with the developers and other funders to ensure that the sponsors' requirements are being met and if required, provide project management support to the developer team: meet with the developers on a regular basis to ensure that targets are being achieved and give project direction.

  • Ensure that projects are professionally managed and are driven to deliver the agreed outputs within budget, interfacing with Shell technical experts and assets as required.

  • Progress projects in the Technology maturation tollgates

4. Relationship Management

  • Identify appropriate stakeholders and engage/manage relationship(s) at appropriate level. This extends to other oil and gas companies, Universities, State and Federal Research Councils, Regulatory authorities e.g. ANP, CNPq etc.

  • Manage project relationships to ensure appropriate oversight of the projects, identify and maintain engagement in the programmes from the participants and promote integration between work streams towards a common goal.

5. General

  • Maintain surveillance of the wider technology arena, and track developments, competitor and supplier activity with potential relevance to the Low-Carbon Tech agenda: attend relevant industry conferences, develop networks of contacts etc.

  • Communicate effectively at all levels, both internally and externally: share knowledge with relevant internal and external stakeholders.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering is required (PhD degree is desirable)

  • 5+ years of experience in related field

  • Technical and analytical expertise in research and development

  • Strong expertise in Aspen Tech (steady‑state modelling, reactors, separation trains, property methods)

  • Proven experience conducting TEA for energy, fuels, or chemical processes, including cost estimation methodologies (estimates, equipment sizing, scaling laws).

  • Deep knowledge of process engineering principles, reaction systems, heat/mass transfer, and process integration

  • Familiarity with advanced fuel technologies such as HEFA, FT‑SAF, ATJ, gasification routes, e‑methanol, green hydrogen, ammonia, or similar
