Scope of Position

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is committed to enhancing the safety of clinical care provided to patients. In alignment with the strategic direction of OSUWMC,. the Director develops strategic and operational plans to ensure OSUWMC continues its journey to become a world-renowned High Reliability Organization (HRO), embedding HRO principles—such as putting safety first, anticipating risks, and learning from errors—into every aspect of patient safety work.

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, Quality and Safety for the Health System and the Chief Operating Officer of the James Cancer Hospital, and in collaboration with senior leadership, the Director serves as a subject matter expert in clinical patient safety, overseeing the enterprise patient safety program with the goal of providing high-quality, reliable, and safe patient care. This role is pivotal in supporting OSUWMC’s transformation into a high reliability organization by leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive clinical patient safety program. The Director proactively identifies opportunities for improvement, minimizes errors and adverse events, and cultivates a culture of safety that is measurable and sustainable.

Position Summary

This position guides the strategy necessary to establish and maintain OSUWMC as a top-tier academic medical center. The Director guides overall patient safety management and performance improvement activities focused on patient safety, ensuring standardization of practice and alignment with organizational priorities and HRO principles. The Director drives performance metrics, analyzes data trends, and coaches multidisciplinary care teams to improve performance. The Director evaluates current programs, leads improvement strategies, and develops action plans that optimize performance. The Director proactively leads an engagement strategy with other disciplines to ensure that information about patient safety performance is consistently delivered in meaningful and adaptable ways to unit leadership, dyads/triads as applicable and frontline staff. In support of our high reliability journey, this position is responsible for fostering collaborative relationships across OSUWMC to enable multidisciplinary support and engagement for safety related education, assessment, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in health care administration (MHA) or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 10 years of experience in a clinical setting with demonstrated expertise in health care clinical patient safety and/or experience in a strategic patient safety position in a complex healthcare environment. 15 or more years of relevant experience preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills, ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy and procedure manuals, and effectively present information to Associates, Executive Leadership, Committees, and the Board.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, EMR systems/databases, and navigating the Internet.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of hospital staff through C-Suite.

  • Ongoing: Performs administrative functions satisfactorily. Appropriate certification from professional organizations is required.
