South San Francisco Full time

2026 Summer Intern - Biology Research | AI Development

We seek a highly motivated research intern to join our Regulatory Language Understanding (ReLU) group within Genentech's department of Biology Research AI Development (BRAID). In BRAID, we develop machine learning methods for various applications in research biology and target discovery. This role offers the unique opportunity to develop and apply cutting-edge machine learning methods to improve our understanding of gene regulation. A successful candidate for this role should have practical experience in deep learning and state-of-the-art Python-based machine learning libraries, as well as a passion for understanding biological mechanisms. The candidate will further our work on sequence modeling approaches that can be used to advance programs in gene and cell therapy.

This intern will drive a project within our team, working on topics such as improving methods to predict the activity of out-of-distribution sequences, model-guided DNA sequence design, or leveraging models to understand sequence determinants of gene expression.

This internship is located on-site in South San Francisco, CA

The Opportunity

  • You will develop novel methods for DNA sequence evaluation or design with therapeutic applications.

  • Train or fine-tune DNA sequence models on genomics data, such as single-cell ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, or MPRAs.

  • Predict and contextualize the impact of genomic edits using DNA sequence models.

  • Present research findings to the team and contribute to publications or conference presentations.

  • Collaborate closely on machine learning projects with machine learning scientists and biologists.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer) 2026.

  • A stipend will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

  • Deliver final presentations of project work to senior leaders

  • Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions

Who You Are

Required Education

Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors

Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biology, or related computational field.

Required skills

  • Strong research interest in genomics, regulatory genomics, or the non-coding genome.

  • Fluent in Python and experience with modern Python frameworks for deep learning (e.g. PyTorch or TensorFlow).

  • Experience with sequence models such as Borzoi, Enformer or Decima; DNA/RNA language models; or models of RNA activity.

  • Previous educational exposure to basic concepts in cell biology and gene expression.

Preferred skills

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex bioinformatics concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, public code repositories, or equivalent.

  • Experience using DNA sequence models for biological interpretation, in silico experimentation, and design.

  • Curiosity about biological mechanisms of cis-regulatory elements (enhancers, promoters) and how they drive gene expression in cellular differentiation, development, and disease.

  • A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for bridging ML and biology.
