Role Overview

A Yard Operations Team Leader is responsible for supervising, guiding and supporting yard staff to ensure all daily activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required standard. The role focuses heavily on people management and supporting presence, allocating tasks, providing clear direction, monitoring performance, and supporting team members throughout the shift. A key priority is maintaining high housekeeping standards across the yard, ensuring work areas remain clean, organised, and safe. By coordinating the team, resolving issues promptly, and keeping workflows on track, the Yard Operations Team Leader plays a crucial role in enabling smooth day‑to‑day yard operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction for all yard operations to ensure high team performance.
  • Oversee task allocation and effectively utilise staffing, skills, and resources.
  • Act as escalation point for staff and driver operational issues, resolving problems quickly.
  • Ensure loads are secured, labelled, and checked prior to dispatch.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards across all yard and loading areas.
  • Lead investigations into loading discrepancies and implement corrective measures.
  • Ensure compliance with Safe Systems of Work and safety standards.
  • Monitor mandatory training completion and ensure 100% compliance.
  • Conduct or support investigations into incidents, near-misses, and accidents.
  • Identify skills gaps and support training, onboarding, and development of team members.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in a yard, logistics, warehousing, or similar operational environment.
  • Experience leading, supervising, or coordinating teams.
  • Strong understanding of health & safety practices, including Safe Systems of Work.
  • Ability to allocate tasks, manage workloads, and maintain operational flow.
  • Experience conducting investigations (e.g., discrepancies, safety incidents).
  • Ability to maintain high housekeeping and safety standards.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to give clear direction.
  • Competence in managing attendance processes, including Return to Work interviews.
  • Ability to support recruitment, onboarding, and training activities.
  • Good organisational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
