The Materials & Processes Engineering (MPE) department is responsible for developing and delivering advanced materials technologies and manufacturing solutions to enable system-level enhancements for both Military and Commercial jet engines.

The Materials Characterization organization is seeking an experienced professional to work in our X-ray micro computed tomography (micro-CT) team. The micro-CT engineer will work within inter-disciplinary teams to define micro-CT scanning and analysis approaches tailored for various projects as well as reporting out results to multidisciplinary teams. The micro-CT engineer will work with internal and external resources to directly impact various programs, including new materials technology and process development, field investigation and root cause determination, and support of product and process validation, and manufacturing / quality issues resolution.

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate directly with multiple engineering teams across Pratt & Whitney to define work scope and data requirements to support development, manufacturing, and field support projects.

  • Define and execute micro-CT scan and analysis plans to meet project needs.

  • Produce technical reports, communicate micro-CT results and engage with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Utilize in-house micro-CT resources and leverage external vendor capabilities.

  • Advance micro-CT scanning and analysis technology and procedures.

  • Work collaboratively with micro-CT team, Materials Characterization group, and the broader MPE organization.

  • Train engineers and technicians on micro-CT scanning and analysis procedures.

  • Work in a fast-paced environment where support of multiple concurrent projects is typical.

  • Exhibit strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment while consistently meeting deadlines.

  • Travel up to 10%.

Qualifications You Must Have: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, etc.).

  • 5+ years of relevant experience with heavy emphasis in materials characterization techniques or an Advanced Degree in relevant field with emphasis in materials characterization techniques and 3+ years of relevant experience.

  • Fundamental knowledge of X-ray physics, such as absorption, scattering, and fluorescence.

  • US Citizenship required as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • PhD or Masters degree in relevant field with heavy emphasis in materials characterization techniques (Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, etc.).

  • Leadership in development and implementation of advanced characterization techniques.

  • Background in at least one of the following X-ray characterization techniques: X-ray computed tomography, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Laue diffraction.

  • Coding experience for image analysis and data quantification (MATLAB and / or Python preferred) as well as computed tomography analysis experience, particularly with software such as Volume Graphics, Avizo, and Dragonfly.

  • Experience working with collaborative teams to solve technically difficult problems.

  • Proficient at presenting technical data to both technical and non-technical audiences, with strong oral and written communication skills.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
