Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Workday Business System Analyst (FIN) at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, based in our Evanston, Illinois, office. The Workday Business System Analyst (FIN) is responsible for developing and managing custom Finance reports and dashboards for UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement organizations. The analyst initiates business- as- usual type changes and delivers reporting solutions that provide meaningful insights and data analysis to support decision-making and meet the organizations’ financial reporting needs.

What you’ll learn and achieve:

As the Workday Business System Analyst (FIN) you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Design, develop, test, and implement custom reports and dashboards in Workday using tools such as Workday Report Writer, Workday Report Designer, and Workday Prism Analytics.

  • Translate business requirements into accurate, actionable reports by interpreting data sources and understanding stakeholder needs.

  • Execute standard operational updates (initiating business‑as‑usual change requests), including creating and modifying Expense Items, finance- and grant‑related Worktags, Ledger Accounts, Payment Terms, Procurement Reasons, Requisition Types, and Revenue Categories.

  • Configure Spend Categories, Cost Centers, Cost Center Hierarchies, and Organizations across both Workday and Adaptive. Generate and analyze finance-related data and metrics to provide insights that support strategic decision-making.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including managers, Finance teams, and executives, to understand their needs and translate them into meaningful solutions across both reporting and business-as-usual-requests.

  • Ensure the accuracy and reliability of existing reports and dashboards by regularly reviewing and updating them. Adjust reports layouts, data sources, and calculations to enhance usability, relevance, and data integrity.

  • Stay current with Workday updates, industry trends, and emerging technologies to enhance reporting capabilities and effectively leverage new features, while maintaining strong data governance practices.

  • Ensure the integrity and security of data used in reports and dashboards by adhering to established data governance policies and best practices. Maintain data accuracy, consistency, and confidentiality through proper controls and ongoing monitoring.

  • Validate and reconcile data from multiple sources to ensure the reliability, consistency, and accuracy of report outputs.

  • Document report requirements, specifications and processes to support future reference, knowledge sharing, and consistent reporting practices.

  • Provide training and support to end-users and create clear, user-friendly documentation and guides to assist with system use and understanding.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including HR, Finance, IT, and other key stakeholders to gather requirements, align reporting with organizational goals, and ensure clear communication for issue resolution and progress updates.

  • Document and execute routine Finance-related requests in adherence with standard change control processes.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Strong understanding of financial processes, including General Ledger (GL), Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), FP&A, Fixed Assets, and related functions.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial data appropriately.

  • Understanding data governance principles and best practices.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Information Systems, or related field.

  • 5 years of relevant experience.

  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Workday Report Writer, Report Designer, Prism Analytics, Adaptive) is a plus.

  • Prior experience with Workday is required.
