Job Description:

The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard. You are NOT required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position.

The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for a Wildland Fire Supervisor. This is a permanent full-time state position located in Hermiston, Oregon.

This position is classified as Management Service and is not represented by a union.

The salary range listed in this announcement is the non-PERS rate. If you are PERS eligible the salary range is $5,607.00 - $8,254.00

What You Will be Doing

The primary purpose of this position is to provide administrative oversight and planning of wildland fire suppression activities, and specialized expertise at Rees Training Center, Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility Boardman, and Biak Training Center. The incumbent also assists in planning, development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of an integrated wildland fire management program to achieve resource management objectives.  Coordinates with Oregon Department of Forestry and other outside agencies. Maintains safety first as the foundation for all aspects of fire management. The primary responsibility is to provide technical guidance, program development and review, and to plan, coordinate, and monitor the fire management program and operations using data from various sources within Western, Central and Eastern Oregon.  This position provides technical and administrative supervision to the units.

Working Conditions

Normally the work is sedentary but often requires physical exertion while overseeing fire suppression activities including walking over rough, steep, uneven terrain in all types of weather. The incumbent is faced with emergency situations at all hours and must respond quickly. The position may require long shifts or multi-day assignments under primitive living conditions during emergencies. During the fire season, extended fire assignments away from the unit may be required under very stressful conditions. Most work is performed in an office setting. Field work is sometimes performed in steep terrain where surfaces may be uneven, rocky, or covered with thick vegetation. Temperatures are frequently extreme, both from weather and fire conditions where the presence of smoke and/or dust conditions are frequently severe. The hazardous nature of fire suppression work requires that protective clothing (boots, hard hats, etc.) be worn during emergencies. The incumbent must exercise a variety of safety practices and precautions for their own and others' well being.

What You Need to Qualify
Five (5) years of wildland fire suppression or emergency dispatching which includes one (1) year of leading/supervising the work of others.

***OR***

Bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and two (2) year of wildland fire suppression or emergency dispatching which includes one (1) year of leading/supervising the work of others.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Must pass and maintain a physical fitness (pack test) at the arduous level.
