WIC RD Nutrition Coordinator

Job Summary:

Provide technical assistance to MG WIC nutrition personnel and administrators in areas of nutrition education, nutrition program development, local agency staff training and evaluation. Offers support in participant / WIC staff issues, and vendor issues, as well as fostering community outreach through collaborations with community programs that impact WIC participants. Oversees WIC medically high-risk caseload and provides evidence-based nutrition/ health and breastfeeding education and counseling directly to WIC participants.

Job Description:

Technical Support:

  • Provides expert technical assistance to WIC staff including interpretation of federal and state policies, standards, nutrition program legislation and regulations.
  • Interprets and transmits current scientific information regarding food, nutrition, diet and health promotion especially relating to areas of maternal and child health.
  • Conducts chart audits monthly to ensure compliance for State and Federal reviews.
  • Oversees training and continuing education of WIC staff in areas of nutrition and counseling.
  • Oversees development of group education programs and nutrition education materials for WIC participants, including bulletin boards, newsletters, handouts, and social media content. Ensures that group topics, newsletters and handouts reflect the interests and needs of the WIC participant  population and are presented clearly and sensitively, with an emphasis on appropriate literacy level.
  • Develops nutrition education programs and displays that can be used  for community outreach.
  • Represents MG WIC at State WIC Agency Nutritionist Meetings and other community programs that benefit WIC or WIC participants in areas of nutrition and health. Reports to WIC staff any updates, recommendations, policy changes, educational reports, and information gathered relevant to WIC. 
  • Serves on committees or task forces that involve MG WIC, State WIC Agency or community programs that benefit the WIC program, as requested.
  • Maintains and oversees local agency medical formula logs and ensures local agency staff nutrition counseling staff are aware of proper procedures for medical formula/food prescriptions. 
  • Monitors and develops nutrition training for all WIC staff.

Clinical Assessment & Process:

Follows WIC program policies and procedures for accuracy and detail in:

  • Explaining the WIC program
  • Determining WIC eligibility
  • Obtaining, recording and interpreting anthropometrics and hematological data
  • Obtaining and reviewing relevant medical and dietary information
  • Determining nutrition and health risk
  • Assigning WIC priority status
  • Assigning appropriate WIC food prescriptions 
  • Issuing WIC benefits

Uses sensitivity and ensures confidentially when assessing client information.

Ensures all nutrition and health assessments are accurate, complete and properly documented.

Accurately interprets anthropometrics and hematological data

Obtains, reviews and documents relevant medical information.

Determines and assigns nutrition and health risk for priority status according to WIC policies.

Determines nutrition need and assigns appropriate WIC prescription according to WIC guidelines.

Counseling and Client Education:

  • Approaches WIC participant's nutrition, medical and breastfeeding concerns in a professional and caring manner.
  • Uses effective counseling, motivational interviewing and evidence-based information to encourage change.
  • Identifies and addresses participant barriers to successfully facilitate change.
  • Provides nutrition education to all WIC participants in accordance to State WIC Agency guidelines while ensuring education is appropriate for nutrition status/nutrition risk and demonstrates sensitivity to individual participant lifestyles, income levels, and family circumstances. .
  • Ensures referral information is up to date and given to participants in a caring, assertive, and sensitive manner and is documented in client records.
  • Develops and documents goals and objectives with the participant that accurately reflect the participant's nutrition and health status.
  • Ensures WIC clinics are inviting, comfortable, and safe for WIC participants as well as promotes healthy living through handouts, educational videos and bulletin boards.

Professional Development:

  • Takes initiative for own professional growth, development, continuing education, and educational needs.
  • Attends all mandatory WIC training's required by State WIC Agency.
  • Documents all trainings pertaining to State WIC Agency policies.
  • Meets State WIC Agency required annual continuing education requirements.
  • Completes trainings and educational requirements as assigned by the date due.

Other Assigned Duties:

  • Attends team  meetings, work groups, workshops and conferences as assigned and is present, engaged and prepared.
  • Promotes WIC through community outreach, special projects, and duties as assigned.
  • Is flexible when asked to perform other tasks as requested.
  • Accepts supervision and guidance and actively participates in efforts to improve quality of performance.
