WHS Account Safety Manager (Australia)

What success looks like in this role:

Lead and operationalise the EHS/WHS function across Australia to safeguard Unisys associates, the work environment, and the business. This role ensures compliance with Australian WHS/OHS and environmental legislation and client obligations; drives risk reduction across Unisys operations; leads emergency preparedness and incident response; and delivers robust governance and performance reporting.

Key Responsibilities

1) WHS Leadership & Compliance

  • Own and continuously improve the WHS Management System aligned with ISO 45001 principles and applicable Australian legislation
  • Maintain the WHS legal obligations register, compliance calendar, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); ensure effective document control.
  • Ensure timely regulatory and client notifications, health monitoring (where required), and recordkeeping.
  • Conduct internal audits/assessments and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to closure and assist with external audits.

2) Field Risk Management (Defence & Client Sites)

  • Lead task‑based risk assessments (SWMS/JSA) for field activities: electrical safety, heights, confined spaces, remote/isolated work, driving/fleet, fatigue, manual handling, hot works, hazardous substances, and client permit systems.
  • Implement and monitor controls for lone worker safety, journey management, and remote communications.
  • Coordinate site inductions and adherence to client safety protocols, permits, and access/escorting requirements.

3) Performance tracking

  • Set scopes, KPIs/SLAs for key activities
  • Verify contractor competency (if applicable), licences, inductions, SWMS, insurances; perform field verifications and inspections.
  • Oversee initial response to loss prevention and detection events; enforce administrative procedures for compliance.

4) Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Establish, maintain, and exercise emergency plans (aligned to AS 3745 and client site protocols); ensure wardens, first aiders, spill response capability, and equipment readiness.
  • Coordinate with state/territory emergency services and local authorities for training and real events.
  • Lead real‑time incident coordination and escalation in alignment with Business Continuity and client requirements.

5) Incident Management, ICAM & Workers Compensation

  • Lead incident triage, investigation (e.g., ICAM/root cause), and corrective action management.
  • Ensure compliance with notifiable incident requirements and client reporting timelines.
  • Support workers’ compensation and return‑to‑Work programs with HR and line leaders (suitable duties plans, provider coordination).

6) Environmental Compliance & Site Stewardship

  • Maintain an Environmental Management System aligned with ISO 14001 principles
  • Oversee hazardous chemicals and waste inventories/SDS, storage/segregation, manifesting, transport, disposal, and spill response.

7) Sustainability & ESG Enablement

  • Support delivery of sustainability initiatives as requested (energy, waste diversion, fleet emissions, responsible disposal of IT assets/circularity as applicable).
  • Partner with Unisys EHSS&S team to support sustainability reporting needs

8) Training, Competency & Safety Culture

  • Deliver and track mandatory WHS and environmental training (inductions and risk‑specific modules); ensure contractor and security competencies.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and safety stand‑downs; coach leaders to drive a Just Culture and psychological safety.

9) Governance, Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Produce monthly EHS dashboards (injury rates, SIF/SIF‑p, hazards/near misses, training, audits, environmental incidents, waste/energy, CAPA cycle time) as applicable.
  • Brief senior leadership and the Defence account team on risk posture, trends, hotspots, and improvement plans.
  • Safeguard confidentiality and client information handling in line with company policy and Defence requirements.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

  • Preferred: ISO 45001/ISO 14001 auditor qualification; ICAM Lead Investigator certification.
  • 5–8+ years in multi‑site EHS roles with field operations; experience managing third‑party vendors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Australian WHS/OHS and environmental legislation across jurisdictions, including Defence/client site obligations and permit systems.
  • Experience with emergency management (AS 3745), incident investigation, workers’ compensation/RTW, and environmental project management.
  • Active NV1 AGSVA security clearance is mandatory
  • Certificate IV/Diploma (or higher) in WHS, Environmental Science/Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
