WGL - Director, Regulatory Affairs
The Director, Regulatory Affairs is a newly created high impact role responsible for leading the Company’s state regulatory strategy with a focus on proactive advocacy before state regulatory commissions. This executive-level role serves as the primary architect of regulatory engagement, cultivating trusted relationships with commission staff and stakeholders, shaping policy outcomes, and ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements. The role also champions the development of a high-performing regulatory affairs team, fostering expertise, accountability, and continuous growth.
What You'll Do:
Lead the development and execution of comprehensive state regulatory strategies aligned with business objectives
Monitor and analyze regulatory trends; assess risks and opportunities to inform forward-looking strategies
Provide executive leadership with actionable insights on regulatory impacts to business operations and strategic initiatives
Serve as the Company’s lead representative in regulatory forums, technical conferences, settlement negotiations, and stakeholder engagements
Build and maintain trusted, collaborative relationships with state commissions, regulatory staff, and external stakeholders
Advocate for the Company’s positions with federal and state regulators, industry associations, and peer utilities
Represent the Company as an expert witness and lead negotiator in regulatory proceedings
Oversee the preparation and submission of regulatory filings, testimony, and supporting documentation
Ensure compliance with all Public Utility Commission (PUC) requirements and internal regulatory protocols
Direct internal processes for data collection, validation, and analysis to support regulatory positions
Manage external legal counsel and consultants engaged in regulatory matters
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing regulatory affairs team with deep subject matter expertise
Foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation across Regulatory Affairs
Establish best practices and knowledge-sharing frameworks to enhance organizational capability and agility
What You Bring:
10+ years of progressively responsible experience in utility regulation, energy policy, or the natural gas industry
Demonstrated success in regulatory strategy, filings, and advocacy
Experience representing an organization in regulatory proceedings and as an expert witness
Proven strategic leadership with a strong ownership mindset
Exceptional relationship-building and negotiation skills
Ability to manage external partnerships and cross-functional collaboration
Advanced analytical skills with the ability to translate complex regulatory issues into business strategy
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Law, Public Policy, Engineering, or related field required
Master’s degree preferred

We offer a competitive salary range of $178,600 to $260,050 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
