Job Description:
Wet Utilitiy Design Engineer
Abu Dhabi, UAE
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Wet Utility Engineer to join our team! In this role you will be a core member of the infrastructure design team, responsible for producing and coordinating wet utility designs for urban development, roads, and infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi. The role involves hands-on design, authority submissions, and coordination with other disciplines, with moderate independence and limited supervision from senior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Plan and design:
- Potable water distribution networks
- Fire-fighting and irrigation/TSE networks
- Sanitary sewer networks (gravity and pressurized/LP systems)
- Stormwater drainage systems, culverts, manholes, and outfalls
- Perform engineering calculations:
- Hydraulic sizing of pipelines and networks
- Headloss calculations and pressure zone checks
- Pump station, reservoir/tank sizing (in coordination with seniors)
- Basic hydrologic analysis for stormwater (runoff, pipe sizing, inlet spacing)
Design Deliverables
- Prepare and review:
- Utility master plans, layouts, long-sections, and connection details
- CAD drawings/models in AutoCAD/Civil 3D (in coordination with CAD/BIM team)
- Design calculation packages and design basis notes
- Bills of quantities and material take-offs
- Contribute to:
- Tender drawings and outline specifications
- Design reports and technical presentations for clients/authorities
Authority Coordination
- Prepare submission drawings and technical documents for:
- ADDC, ADSSC/ADQCC, ADM/Abu Dhabi City Municipality, ITC/DOT, and other relevant authorities
- Support the authority liaison process by:
- Addressing technical comments and preparing revised drawings/calculations
- Tracking submission status and coordinating with senior engineers and authority PROs
- Ensure designs comply with:
- Abu Dhabi and UAE regulations, manuals, and standards
- Relevant international standards (AWWA, BS/EN, ISO, NFPA where applicable)
Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Coordinate wet utilities with different disciplines through out the project development
- Participate in Internal coordination and clash detection meeting and Preparation of composite utility corridor drawings
- Provide timely inputs to other disciplines to avoid design conflicts and rework
Project Support
- Support senior engineers and project managers with:
- Planning and sequencing of utility design deliverables
- Inputs to technical proposals (scope breakdown, assumptions, basic man-hour estimates)
- Assist in:
- Value engineering exercises (pipe routing optimization, material selection)
- Risk identification related to utilities (interference with existing services, constraints)
Construction Support (As Required)
- Provide design clarifications and responses to RFIs relayed via supervision teams
- Review shop drawings and as-built drawings for compliance with design intent
- Support senior staff during technical meetings with contractors when required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field
- Master’s degree in Water Resources / Environmental Engineering is an advantage
- Registration with UAE Society of Engineers and/or progress towards professional qualification (PE, CEng, or similar) is preferred
- Good knowledge of Abu Dhabi/UAE design guidelines and authority procedures
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience.
Skills and Competencies
Technical Skills
- Solid understanding of hydraulics, hydrology, and pipeline design principles
- Proficiency in:
- AutoCAD (Civil 3D preferred) for plan/profile development
- Hydraulic modeling tools such as WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS, EPANET, SWMM, or equivalent
- Strong MS Excel skills for tabulated calculations and data management
Soft Skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English (Arabic is an advantage)
- Ability to work with moderate independence while taking direction from senior engineers
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet project deadlines
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of mentoring junior engineers/CAD staff on basic tasks
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Accuracy and quality of design drawings, models, and calculation packages
- Compliance with Abu Dhabi authority standards and number of review cycles to obtain approvals
- Timely delivery of assigned tasks within budgeted hours
- Effectiveness of coordination with internal disciplines and reduction of design clashes
- Minimization of design-related comments during tender and construction stages
