Job Summary

Provides clinical mental health and crisis triage services for employees experiencing acute distress, utilizing advanced diagnostic training to assess needs, determine appropriate referral pathways, and identify when immediate intervention or treatment placement is required. Responds to critical and traumatic incidents, offering direct support, coordination, and consultative guidance grounded in professional ethics and best practices. 

Delivers clinically informed wellness briefings during roll calls, conducts one-on-one engagement focused on improving mental health outcomes, and develops evidence-based health and wellness presentations for both sworn and professional members. Additionally, will have opportunities to lead and coordinate wellness related initiatives aligned with departmental goals and best practices.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with and coordinate total well-being programming to reduce health risks and medical costs and encourage healthy lifestyles. 
  • Work with vendors and other HR associates to administer lasting health and wellness programming to the Baltimore Police Department.  
  • Keep abreast of current national wellness and well-being initiatives and activities to assist the Health and Wellness supervisory staff with maintaining a network of resources and contacts to use as appropriate. 
  • Assist in monitoring Peer Support Members' performance to ensure they meet the team's standards of training, performance, and behavior. 
  • Monitor team members to ensure they are not emotionally overwhelmed by the scope of peer support duties. This includes assisting in establishing a peer and professional support apparatus within the team. 
  • Conduct one-on-one mental health talks with members of the BPD.   
  • As a critical component to mandates of the consent decree under section 436—41 “Officer Assistance and Support” the Officer Safety and Wellness Section of the BPD is undergoing exponential growth and development. The Wellness Coordinator position will be instrumental in creating and daily operations of the Health and Wellness program and Peer Support programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s Degree & Licensed clinical social worker (LCSW)

AND

Experience: The ability to Assist with and coordinate total well-being programming to reduce health risk medical costs and encourage healthy lifestyles, work with vendors and other Human Resources associates to administer lasting health and wellness programing into the Baltimore Police Department, keep abreast of current national wellness and well-being initiatives and activities, to assist the Health and Wellness supervisory staff with maintaining a network of resources and contacts to use as appropriate, assist in monitoring Peer Support Members performance to ensure they meet team standard of training, performance, and behavior monitor team members to insure they are not emotionally overwhelmed by the scope of peer support duties, this includes assisting in the establishment of a peer and professional support apparatus within the team itself.

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint screening, and must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a 1-year mandatory probation.
