Job Summary: This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This is a Welder, WG-3703-11 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwestern Division (SWD), Galveston District, Operations Division.

Major Duties:

  • Perform welder duties using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes.
  • Use templates, jigs, blueprints, and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment.
  • Work with light, heavy-gauge, and hardened metals, welding all the various types of weldable items assigned, using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions.
  • Operate and control the various movements of the crane and load to avoid quick drops, jerks or sudden movements which may cause cables to break or loads to fall.
  • Operate forklifts on uneven conditions to unload vehicles and move materials in outside storage yards.
  • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools to position, bend, shape, or modify assemblies or components in a safe and effective manner to accomplish assigned work.
  • Perform general maintenance, care and minor repair of buildings, grounds, and facilities in support of other work crews.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welder ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common welding and repair services such as fabricate, cut, assemble, modify, and/or repair various metals. I can plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications and work orders or verbal instructions, and select material for fabrication or repair. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, lying down and working in cramped and confined areas and awkward positions. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS The work is done indoors and outdoors, on land and over water sometimes in bad weather, in areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. Occasionally working from ladders, platforms, and personal baskets plus boatswain's chairs. There is danger of falls, electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises, broken bones, and exposure to fumes, flying spares, fire and arc burns from welding equipment. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing and equipment like respirators, gloves, safety hats, leather, flotation devices, and safety belts.
