The Principal Engineer is the first level in the Technical Title functional pathway and carries design authority as well as the expectation of technical expertise, problem solving skills, communication skills, people skills, and contributions to the technical community. Principal Engineers are recognized technical experts in a specific aspect of a discipline and its application, are effective mentors to early career engineers, Are effective and noted for their ability in communicating technical issues throughout the organization, and are leaders applying science, engineering, theory, and processes, standards, best practices, and lessons learned.
Chemistry and Chemical Engineers develop processes to induce or prevent chemical transformations or phase transitions, designs sensing techniques for chemical assays, and engineers' synthesis and refining systems for production, improvement, mixing or compounding of materials. Achieving these goals often requires the selection of valves, static or rotating equipment, solvents, absorbers, or novel materials. Chemists must assess risks and hazards and implement mitigating measures. Chemical engineers use principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology, to efficiently produce, design, transport and transform energy and materials. Practical applications include coatings, paintings, nanomaterials, biology, fluid design, corrosion, surface wear and galling, lubrication and tribology, electrochemistry, fuel cells, membrane deign, catalysts, and material characterization, selection and compatibility.
Executes projects to evaluate and improve the performance, cost, or reliability of existing products and services, as driven by supply chain, quality, reliability, and product line needs. Advises on design for manufacture and reliability for ongoing projects. Supports AMO, category management and procurement teams sourcing raw, intermediate and/or finished goods needed for manufacturing.
