Job Overview:

LPL Financial is seeking a VPII to Lead the Direct Business Technology organization supporting Mutual Funds, Annuities, and Insurance. This leader will own both the business strategy and the engineering delivery that enable advisors and institutions to transact, service, and grow their direct business through LPL’s platforms.

This role sits at the intersection of business ownership, technology strategy, engineering excellence, and operational stewardship. The VPII will lead engineering teams responsible for delivering scalable platforms, integrating with carriers and product sponsors, modernizing legacy systems, and enabling frictionless advisor experiences.

The ideal candidate has a blend of financial product expertise, strong engineering leadership, and proven cross-functional influence to drive outcomes in a highly regulated, fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities

Business Leadership & Ownership

  • Define and execute the strategic roadmap for technology that supports LPL’s direct Mutual Fund, Annuity, and Insurance business.

  • Ensure technology capabilities align with product strategy, regulatory requirements, business growth goals, and advisor experience improvements.

  • Partner with Finance, Product Management, Compliance, Risk, Operations, and Service to manage all aspects of direct product lifecycle and business performance.

Engineering Leadership & Delivery

Team Leadership & Management

  • Lead, manage, and mentor high-performing engineering teams responsible for building and supporting direct business platforms.

  • Foster an open engineering culture focused on innovation, accountability, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.

  • Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent (developers, leads, QA, SRE, DevOps).

Technical Strategy & Architectural Oversight

  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture to define platform architecture, patterns, and technology modernization strategies.

  • Set engineering standards, ensure high code quality, and enable scalable, secure platforms.

  • Oversee the creation of microservices, APIs, integration layers, and cloud-native solutions supporting carrier and product partner connectivity.

Project & Delivery Management

  • Lead delivery of complex technology initiatives across mutual funds, annuities, and insurance processes.

  • Ensure projects meet deadlines, comply with budget, adhere to regulatory requirements, and deliver high-quality outcomes.

  • Oversee pre-production environments, development pipelines, release processes, and production support.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for automation, workflow optimization, and modernization of legacy systems.

  • Implement engineering best practices (CI/CD, cloud adoption, SRE practices, DevOps maturity).

  • Drive Agile ceremonies and iterative delivery, ensuring teams are efficient, aligned, and productive.

Stakeholder, Vendor & Carrier Collaboration

Internal Stakeholders

  • Collaborate with Product, Service, Operations, Compliance, Risk, and Field organizations to ensure end-to-end alignment.

  • Translate business needs into technical requirements and ensure seamless integration into advisor workflows.

External Partners

  • Serve as a senior technology point of contact for mutual fund companies, annuity providers, and insurance carriers.

  • Oversee vendor API integrations, platform connectivity, SLAs, and technical escalation paths.

Risk Management & Regulatory Alignment

  • Ensure all technology solutions adhere to FINRA, SEC, state insurance, cybersecurity, and data privacy standards.

  • Implement strong controls, audit readiness, monitoring, and incident response mechanisms.

  • Proactively identify operational and technical risks and implement mitigation strategies.

Strategic Planning

  • Contribute to long-term technology and business planning for LPL’s direct product ecosystem.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies to determine applicability to direct business processes and advisor solutions.

  • Influence enterprise roadmaps to prioritize functionality supporting Mutual Funds, Annuities, and Insurance.

What Are We Looking For?

We want collaborative leaders who can deliver world-class advisor experiences, motivate teams, solve complex technical problems, and drive aligned outcomes across business and engineering domains.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or related field (MBA preferred).

  • 15+ years total experience, including:

    • Strong foundation in software engineering and system design

    • Experience supporting financial services products (Mutual Funds, Annuities, Insurance strongly preferred)

  • 10+ years leading engineering teams in a managerial or technical leadership role.

  • 5+ years working as a Solution Architect or equivalent, designing technical platforms from the ground up.

  • Deep experience with:

    • Full-stack development

    • Microservices, REST APIs, vendor integrations

    • Cloud technologies (AWS preferred)

    • .NET, C#, Python,  SQL, Angular/Javascript (or comparable stacks)

  • Strong understanding of regulated workflows, suitability, compliance, carrier relationships, and product distribution ecosystems.

  • Excellent communication skills with strong executive presence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AWS/Azure Cloud certifications

  • Experience in a broker-dealer, RIA platform, or wealth management technology environment

  • Familiarity with annuity order entry systems, fund transaction processing, and carrier integration platforms

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and drive enterprise-scale initiatives

Pay Range:

$186,525-$310,875/year


 

Actual base salary varies based on factors, including but not limited to, relevant skill, prior experience, education, base salary of internal peers, demonstrated performance, and geographic location.
