Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Key member of the global Protection leadership team, partnering closely with fellow Protection executives to drive timely delivery of the Line of Business strategy and priorities, while ensuring decisions are underpinned by robust legal analysis, clear governance, and proactive identification and escalation of key risks.
- Management of Legal team members working on Protection business globally, including direct line management of Legal team members allocated to the Protection line of business and proactive team leadership, focusing on ongoing mentoring and development.
- Work closely with the Protection line of business globally in managing development and deployment of reinsurance documentation for new business, and amendments to in-force transactions.
- Oversight of the treaty drafting process of the legal team, including reviewing treaty language, liaising with internal stakeholders, developing and communicating corporate positions on contract wording, monitoring industry trends, and supporting or handling negotiations with counterparties.
- Ensure PL Re philosophy and governance are followed regarding matters covered by the Special Treaty Terms Policy, particularly recapture and repricing rights. Review and take accountability for legal drafting of these clauses.
- Maintain quality reinsurance treaty and addendum templates for the Protection business in relevant markets.
- Provide training, oversight and support to lawyers supporting the Protection line of business globally.
- Provide training to members of other teams working in the Protection line of business globally.
- Oversee the team’s proactive research and advice on regulatory matters and legal developments (including opportunities) which could materially impact the Protection line of business.
- Oversee relationships with law firms advising on Protection matters, including disputes.
- Liaise with other lawyers within PL Re and the Pacific Life Group to maintain relevant standards and collaborate on Division and Group-wide projects.
- Lead advice on interpretation and judgement matters and advise on disputes with clients or third parties relating to the Protection business.
Qualifications & Experience
- Qualified solicitor, preferably with at least 10 years’ PQE.
- Experience in insurance or reinsurance.
- Experience managing a team is desirable.
- Credible in discussions with senior management and regulators.
- Organised, conscientious, and deadline focused with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage competing demands and deal with non-standard and often unstructured requests at short notice.
- Motivated to take ownership of work and seek further responsibility.
