Position Description:

Reporting to the SVP, Intercontinental and Gilead Patient Solutions (ICR & GPS), the VP GM Japan will be accountable for the expansion of the Japan business and management of the affiliate. S/he will be responsible for setting the long-term strategy, planning, and execution within Japan, to include category analytics, growth and profitability strategies, key partnerships, including government agencies and co-promotion partners. This leader will work cross-functionally, across the broader Gilead Commercial team and across Gilead and in partnership with Kite colleagues in Japan.

S/he will provide strategic direction and management to continue to build a strong team and create a high-performance working culture so that the business achieves its ambitious performance objectives and systems and procedure keep pace.

This includes ensuring the achievement of company objectives and profit targets and the success of new product launches, from marketing vision and strategy to implementation. S/he will also interface effectively with the relevant global divisions to maximize global commercial strategy implementation, lifecycle opportunities for products locally and business development activities locally or at a global level.  The VP, GM Japan will be a member of the ICR & GPS Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overall representation of Gilead Japan, including:

    • Legal and fiscal responsibilities and being the representative of the company (and associated entities) on legal/statutory issues.

    • The interface between the company and other pharmaceutical companies, patient groups, scientific organizations, customers, suppliers, government authorities, media and key opinion leaders.

    • Compliance with business conduct and local employment laws.

  • Maximizing the sales and profit growth of the affiliate:

    • Demonstrate deep financial acumen inclusive of prior P&L responsibility.

    • Take responsibility for the profitable development of the affiliate, maximizing the potential of existing product ranges and ensuring the successful introduction of new products.

    • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of reporting.

    • Ensure appropriate product pipeline, meeting Japan customer needs

  • In partnership with the Japan Leadership Team (JLT), position the company with key stakeholders within the country including government & health authorities, key opinion leaders, policy makers, media and payers. Develop the brand of the affiliate and ensure Gilead Japan is respected and viewed as a highly professional player.

  • Drive access negotiations and Government Affairs activities priorities in all therapy areas with relevant stakeholders – payers, regulators, the scientific community and relevant patient associations.

  • Shape the organization, coach, lead and develop the country leadership team; foster cross-functional teamwork as well as a respectful culture based on Core Values/Leadership Commitments which attracts, develops and retains high caliber talent to build and shape a talent pool that will drive the future successes of the organization.

  • Provide motivational leadership through personal example and by forming and leading a highly motivated and energetic management team.

  • Play a full and active part, alongside other Senior Executives in the growth of the affiliate. Work closely with the Business Units to ensure revenue and growth targets are met on a product-by-product basis.

  • The position will be based in Tokyo, Japan.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experienced professional with significant experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, including expertise in sales and marketing and related functions.

  • Track record of leading a business within the specialty pharma space and hands-on experience in an operational management position either as Regional Head (above country), Division Head, General Manager or General Manager in Japan.

  • Have experience in working in countries with a different/diverse cultural and business background

  • Have experience in multinational companies and/or international experience in both developed and emerging markets.

  • Be experienced with product launch and lifecycle management, especially in the context of specialty products.

  • Understand the development and regulatory pathways to develop and launch products

  • Experience leading the business at all levels and across all functions, including Medical Affairs, Regulatory, Finance and other Corporate Functions etc.

  • Be data driven in their approach to analysis and decision making with the knowledge and ability to interpret and develop key insights from available data and drive strategy based on those insights.

  • Be science driven, with strong scientific acumen and an ability to develop a deep understanding of the therapeutic medical needs

  • Have strong financial skills with a proven ability to manage full P&L and balance sheet at a local level. Be Entrepreneurial with a bias toward action and a results orientation.

  • Have a strong work ethic and personal integrity. With excellent communication and presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to gain credibility, engender trust and influence all levels.

  • Specific performance competencies include:

  • Ability to establish, implement and communicate a clear, compelling and inspiring vision of growth which is linked with the overall strategy of the business, driving superior sales and market share growth through an intense focus on priorities.

  • Strong executive presence with ability to command respect through exercise of sound business judgment and clear decision-making, and excellent communication skills.

  • Proven general management and leadership capability: ability to lead, manage, motivate and develop (coach) a cross-functional country leadership team, possessing excellent interpersonal skills to lead, interact with, focus, resolve conflict and drive consensus among individuals from a variety of disciplines.

  • In-depth experience in Market Access including knowledge of the Japan market.

  • Excellent strategic thinking skills with ability to formulate, develop and execute strategy including a demonstrated ability to conceive, develop and implement multi-dimensional marketing and business plans with excellence in project management/prioritization.

  • Successfully manage a significant budget possessing a high level of skill and experience in revenue forecasting.

  • Good understanding of and ability to influence other functions within an affiliate and within corporate International/Global structures

  • Fluent in English is a requirement, proficiency in Japanese  is a bonus
