The VP - Deputy Chief Underwriter assists in overseeing the company's underwriting function for a specific product and in developing and implementing underwriting techniques. This role requires deep knowledge of product-related guidelines, an extensive track record with multiple platforms or products, and the ability to maintain a high level of service for both internal and external customers.

  • Support the Chief Underwriter in recruiting, developing, mentoring, and retaining a diverse talent pool. 
  • Collaborate with the Chief Underwriter to manage the deployment of the company's team of underwriters and analysts, including managing underwriting assignments and scheduling. 
  • Assist the Chief Underwriter in implementing credit policy standards and provide guidance on specific transactions by reviewing underwriting narratives and files. 
  • Contribute to the supervision, creation, and application of policies and procedures supporting the underwriting function, and evaluate closed loans for consistency with original underwriting parameters. 
  • Help foster and maintain external relationships with agencies and other trade associations. 
  • Assist in developing the annual budget for the business unit and support the Chief Underwriter in achieving and exceeding business performance metrics and drivers. 
  • Lead or contribute to training on Fannie Mae products, risk concepts, underwriting best practices, and Guide changes.
  • Help manage staffing, workload balancing, and prioritization on the Fannie Mae underwriting platform. 
  • Oversee underwriting quality on a portfolio of deals, ensuring consistent application of credit standards, sizing, and underwriting assumptions.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert on the Fannie Mae DUS Guide, forms, and credit policies
  • Interpret and communicate Guide changes and Fannie Mae lender letters to underwriting, production, and closing teams.
  • Mentor and develop underwriters and analysts; provide deal-level coaching and structured feedback.
  • Other duties as assigned.
