Summary

Maintains digital observation of patients requiring continuous monitoring for safety concerns.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below.  In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Assume responsibility for monitoring designated patients

  • Perform patient safety monitoring duties

  • Responsible for initial set-up of required equipment/camera in patients’ room

  • Clean and appropriately disinfect equipment between patient usage

  • Alert nurse, nursing assistant or other competent staff to respond to alarms resulting from patient movement or behavior

  • Document direct observation records as indicated and anytime intervention is necessary

  • Check with patients’ nurse or Lead Charge Nurse for any special instructions

  • Respond to needs of patients by reporting patient needs to the appropriate person

  • Provide verbal intervention when necessary, utilizing the Patient Observer System

  • Intervene with patient and call for assistance when necessary

  • Provide patient’s right to privacy

  • Participate in educational and Performance Improvement activities

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • High school graduate or equivalent required

Work Experience

  • 1 year nursing assistant experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Read, write and speak English

  • Ability to navigate computer system

  • Skills and knowledge to conduct safe individual activities with patients

  • Strong observation and intervention skills with patients and family members

  • Proficient in interpersonal communication skills

  • Verbal communication skills to allow for calm communication with patient and patient’s family members

Physical Requirements

  • Works at computer/monitor for long periods

  • Ability to remain calm under emergency situations

  • Work involves a variety of activities including walking, standing, and sitting

  • Ability to communicate verbally

  • Auditory and visual acuity to accurately perform job functions

  • Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
