BASIC FUNCTION:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Multimedia & Digital Communications, in the Office of University Communications, the Videographer/Multimedia Specialist is responsible for planning, directing, and conducting video and photo shoots both in studio and on location. The role involves capturing content related to Howard University leadership, campus events, activities, and meetings. The position also entails producing storytelling content that aligns with the University’s brand identity and supports its reputation. Strong storytelling abilities, technical proficiency, and photography skills are required to create various types of digital and long-form video content to address institutional objectives.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:                

Supervises student interns as needed. No other accountabilities are projected in this role.

NATURE AND SCOPE:           

Internal contacts include faculty, staff, administrators, students and University leadership.  External contacts include vendors, partners, and alumni.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:      

  • Develops visual/audiovisual/still photography strategies to support the brand identity of Howard University.
  • Collaborates with Office of University Communications (OUC) team members to conceptualize and plan video solutions to meet institutional goals and objectives.
  • Attends and contributes to regular meetings within the Office of University Communications.
  • Works collaboratively with digital content producers across the University, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Plans, directs, and executes video and photo shoots in studio and on location.
  • Demonstrates the ability to handle all phases of assigned projects from concept through final delivery.
  • Demonstrates strong photography skills for an adaptive environment when photography needs are required.
  • Edits and color grades projects using non-linear software such as Adobe Lightroom, Premiere, etc.
  • Engages approved freelance support as needed.
  • Independently provides stylized, creative content within the University’s brand guidelines.
  • Grasp of best practices for accessibility, captioning, and SRT files.
  • Communicates effectively with staff and internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective, relevant and timely completion of assignments.
  • Research and provides advice on the latest industry-related practices and technologies.
  • Transports equipment and/or travel to locations via personal vehicle or University transportation to assignments.
  • Manages and catalogues content in the internal digital asset management system.
  • Conducts routine equipment maintenance.
  • Successfully manage multiple projects.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:         

  • Experience with directing on-camera talent, participants, or personalities is a strong plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in various positions on a production crew.
  • Strength in creativity, organization, attention to detail, and ability to function as part of a team independently with specific or ambiguous direction.
  • Experience using Canon ecosystem a plus.
  • Strong production and post-production skills.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in social media, generative ai, ai workflows, streaming platforms, and digital video marketing is a big plus.
  • Experience capturing both portrait-style content and live event coverage is a strong plus.
  • Experience setting up and managing audio for video productions.
  • Some familiarity with generative AI production workflows, including but not limited to Midjourney, Kling, Suno, Google Labs (Veo/Flow, etc), and other emerging tools. Ability to integrate these technologies into storytelling, ideation, and post-production pipelines is a major plus.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines, successfully multi-task, and work within established brand/product guidelines.
  • Computer proficient and proficient in non-linear editing, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, and related software.
  • Proficient in visual production and design software, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Lightroom
  • General administrative software programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FTP clients, general internet search, and research skills.
  • Strong drive and initiative. Self-motivated.
  • Media file management and organization and understanding of multiple digital media formats, codecs, and containers.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Animation skills are a plus but not required.
  • Understands the power of feedback and input on projects.
  • Positive, professional attitude and strong team player.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree in photography, film, video production, or a related field. 2 or more years of general production experience, including shooting, interviewing, recording, editing and finished professional quality video media. Ability to work outside of normal business hours, including travel outside of the area.

Expected Salary Range: $65,000 - $72,000
