Description
The VP of Technology is a senior executive responsible for setting the technological vision, strategy, and execution across all digital platforms and systems. This role leads the development and operation of our e-commerce storefront, subscription-based digital reading and listening applications, enterprise sales systems, and marketing technology stack. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with business acumen and a passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences through technology.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the company's technology roadmap aligned with business objectives
- Partner with executive leadership to identify technology-driven growth opportunities
- Evaluate emerging technologies (AI/ML, voice, personalization engines) for competitive advantage
- Own technology budgeting, vendor relationships, and build-vs-buy decisions
Product & Platform Ownership
- Oversee development of ecommerce platforms (web and mobile) ensuring performance, scalability, and conversion optimization
- Oversee engineering for subscription-based apps supporting eBook reading, audiobook streaming, and intelligent search/discovery
- Ensure seamless integration between consumer-facing products and backend fulfillment, inventory, and order management systems
- Drive API strategy for third-party integrations and partner ecosystems
Team Leadership
- Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing technology organization (engineering, DevOps, QA, data, security)
- Foster a culture of innovation, agility, and continuous improvement
- Establish engineering standards, code quality practices, and development methodologies (Agile/Scrum)
Operations & Infrastructure
- Ensure 99.9%+ uptime for all mission-critical systems
- Oversee cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and system architecture
- Own cybersecurity strategy, data privacy compliance (PCI-DSS, GDPR, CCPA), and disaster recovery
Marketing & Sales Systems
- Oversee development and integration of marketing automation, CRM, and customer data platforms
- Enable data-driven marketing through analytics, segmentation, and personalization tools
- Support sales teams with robust POS systems, B2B ordering portals, and reporting dashboards
Qualifications
Required
- 10+ years of progressive technology leadership experience, with 5+ years in executive roles
- Proven track record building and scaling ecommerce and/or subscription digital products
- Deep expertise in modern tech stacks: cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), microservices, mobile development (iOS/Android), streaming media
- Experience with retail systems (ERP, OMS, POS, inventory management)
- Strong understanding of digital content delivery, DRM, and media formats
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams of 30+ engineers across multiple disciplines
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master's/MBA preferred)
Preferred
- Experience in publishing, media, or retail industries
- Familiarity with recommendation engines, search optimization, and AI-powered personalization
- Background in subscription/SaaS business models and recurring revenue optimization
- Experience with multi-channel retail (physical stores + digital)
