Job Description:

The Community Practice on a daily basis will have appointments for preventative care and other problems with client pets, including vaccinations, annual physical exams, elective surgery, and behavior appointments for dogs and cat. Community Practice technicians contribute to patient assessment and handling, client communication, and provide support for a variety of general procedures and laboratory analysis of samples. Technicians provide support to the service and teaching mission of the hospital in collaboration with faculty and veterinary students.

 

Job Responsibilities: 

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 1 

  • 60% Assist with physical exams and obtaining diagnostic/laboratory samples (including venipuncture). Assist with proper animal care and restraint aligning with Fear Free protocols. Perform client communications, including emails, phone calls, and medical records.

  • 20% Assist with analyzing fecals, heartworm tests, urinalyses, and other diagnostics using in-house laboratory equipment. Assist with general anesthesia (including induction and maintenance of anesthesia) for surgical procedures. Follow policy and procedures of proper handling of controlled substances, including proper disposal.

  • 10% Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory for department, including hospital food room. Clean and sanitize exam rooms and treatment room area as needed.

  • 10% Participate with blood bank and on-call, holiday, and emergency shifts in Small Animal ICU and ER. Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Must be actively licensed with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Registered Veterinary Technician.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Actively licensed with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Registered Veterinary Technician and one year of related experience; Fear Free Certified.

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN 2 

  • 60% Perform physical exams and obtaining diagnostic/laboratory samples (including venipuncture). Demonstrate proper animal care and restraint aligning with Fear Free protocols. Perform client communications, including emails, phone calls, and medical records.

  • 20% Perform analyzing fecals, heartworm tests, urinalyses, and other diagnostics using in-house laboratory equipment. Special or Physical Qualifications: 

May be required to work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, holidays, on-call, and emergency response.
