Vet Tech Specialist - Behavior

The primary focus for the BA/BT is to assist behaviorist, Dr. Lore Haug and Dr. Blake Gibson, to make daily function more efficient and effective for the clients.  The BA/BT is expected to be dedicated to promoting the physical and behavioral health and welfare of all patients.  The employee should remember at all times that he/she is a reflection of VCA Lexington and the caring and professional image that we wish to project to the public and our colleagues. The BA/BT should abide by the recommendations and rules set forth in the VCA Employee manual to maintain professional cohesion. The BA/BT’s primary duties include the following:

I.      Prepare for the daily appointments prior to appointment:

  • Ensure the behavior history forms have been returned on time.

    Verify receipt of patient’s medical record from the RDVM – call and request if needed

    Prepare the client binder with handouts (this can also be done the morning of the appt if time permits)

    Prepare client charge update for recheck appointments and print updated drug history sheet

On the day of the appointment

Set up pheromone diffuser on room

Ensure that room is clean and presentable

Stock room with treats and needed equipment

Prepare client binder if not already done

Prepare housecall bag when needed

Assist behaviorist during appointment restraint, medication or product distribution and discussion with client demonstrate behavior modification with patient where applicable

II.             Client Communication and services

Answer short email or phone requests to clarify medications or training. Provide resources and references to client where needed Call in approved prescriptions (new and refills) Field phone calls or emails (e.g. through website) requesting information on TVBS services Assist in scheduling behavior appts esp for housecalls.

III.            Maintaining client/patient charts

Prepare client discharge report – history, behavior observations, discharge notes Prepare and update patient drug history sheet

IV.           Perform independent case appointments as skill level dictates

  • Puppy and Kitten Start right visits

    Behavior Modification Recheck appointments

V.             Inventory and supplies

Monitor product stock and request reorder if needed Maintain information brochures and be sure they are stocked in the exam room and house call bag

VI.           Miscellaneous duties

  • Assist in reviewing, revising and creating client behavior handouts

    Film and edit patient consult videos for clients and RDVMs
