General Motors

Vehicle Performance Engineer – Noise & Vibration

Milford, Michigan, United States of America Full time

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

The Vehicle Performance Engineer – Noise and Vibration (specializing in Wind Noise & Sealing) is responsible for developing integration solutions and leading cross-functional teams to meet vehicle performance requirements. This role involves problem-solving with support from integration leaders, applying engineering concepts, and exercising creative judgment to deliver innovative solutions. A full understanding of the Global Vehicle Development Process (VDP) and proficiency in project planning are essential, along with the ability to work independently with minimal direction. You will exercise creative judgment, apply engineering methods, and lead multi-functional teams to resolve issues and drive innovation.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and integrate components and subsystems to meet noise and vibration performance targets.
  • Participate in design and peer reviews; apply engineering methods.
  • Evaluate vehicles, subsystems, and components for NVH performance using objective measurements and subjective assessments.
  • Set up and operate test and data collection devices (sound recording, accelerometers, etc.) in specialized facilities such as wind tunnels, shaker rigs, and dynamometers.
  • Develop technical solutions to noise issues and validate through testing; collaborate with suppliers and assembly plants to implement changes.
  • Create and execute vehicle testing plans balancing performance, mass, and cost considerations.
  • Perform data analysis (frequency and modal vibration analysis) using tools like LMS and Matlab.
  • Collaborate with analytical engineers to correlate math models with real-world data.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and share lessons learned.
  • Document work, maintain communication with managers, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Occasionally travel for global testing and support production launches.

Technical Focus Areas

  • Wind Noise & Sealing: Optimize sealing strategies, material choices, and attachment methods to minimize wind noise.
  • Squeak & Rattle: Apply best practices to prevent unwanted noises through design and material selection.
  • Testing & Analysis: Operate test equipment and perform advanced NVH analysis using LMS and Matlab.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with architecture, release engineers, advanced development teams, and suppliers.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics, or related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in NVH performance or related areas (Interior Release, Seal Release, Seal Supplier, Quality Engineer).
  • Strong engineering foundation and understanding of physics.
  • Knowledge of mechanical/electrical principles and NVH processes.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively in teams.
  • Self-motivated, eager to learn, and capable of independent decision-making.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in Engineering.
  • 5–7 years of NVH-related experience.
  • Familiarity with LMS and Matlab for data analysis.
  • Experience with advanced NVH analysis tools and vehicle program execution.
  • Familiarity with GM Vehicle Development Process.
  • Leadership experience in technical environments and ability to mentor others.
  • DFSS Green Belt certified.
