General Purpose of Job:

The Vascular Access/PICC Nurse supports and coordinates a multidisciplinary approach to Vascular Access/PICC team efforts at Driscoll Children's Hospital. This is to include evidenced based practices and a standardized approach. The position offers an expert resource in Vascular Access and PICC line insertion to the staff and physicians of Driscoll Children's Hospital.

  • Develop and maintain the overall Vascular Access/PICC Program with input from the Vascular Access/PICC Collaborative.
  • Identify new evidence and facilitate evidenced based approaches.
  • Support standardization of assessments, general interventions, protocols, products, documentation and charging.
  • Develop and maintain policies as indicated.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Provide consultation on complex vascular cases.
  • Assist and mentor nursing staff concerning technique to be utilized with difficult intravascular access.
  • Promote and oversee education concerning vascular access to include screening for PICC candidates.
  • Coordinate vascular access educational events to include certification classes for general staff.
  • Assess competencies of PICC trained nurses.
  • Develop a clear consultation process working toward 24/7 availability.
  • Develop a scheduling process for elective PICC insertions.
  • Perform elective PICC line insertions as ordered by physicians.
  • Support family involvement and effective discharge planning by working with case manger as indicated.
  • Collect and report data to demonstrate outcomes and effectiveness of program.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing Resources and Metrics to provide an annual report and evaluation of the program.

    English Language Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interprt common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 

    Mathematical Skills.

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    Reasoning Ability. 

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    Education and/or Experience:

    • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
    • Active and unincumbered RN license, Texas Board of Nursing.
    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, Preferred.
    • 2 years or greater pediatric patient care experience, Required.
    • Supervisory experience, Recommended.
    • Competency in placement of peripheral catheters.
    • Computer literacy in basic skills and understanding of computer system.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

    Registered Nurse in the State of Texas

    Pediatric PICC Insertion Certification, Preferred.

    Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire.

    Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) upon hire or within 90 days of hire/transfer date
