Location & Schedule

  • In this position you can expect to work onsite and in the field throughout the City and County of Denver, 5 days a week during the training period.

  • Upon completion of training, you will transition to a four-day, 10-hour shift schedule at one of our three campuses: Central Platte, Cherry Creek, or Rosalyn. Campus assignments are not guaranteed and may change based on operational needs.

Solid Waste Management (SWM), within DOTI, provides trash collection, hazardous waste removal, recycling, and composting services for single-family homes, multi-family dwellings (up to seven units), municipal facilities, and Denver Public Schools.

SWM is seeking a Utility Worker II to join the Cart Maintenance Team. This role plays a key part in supporting daily solid waste operations by ensuring carts are delivered, maintained, and readily available.

The Utility Worker II will safely operate a stake bed truck to transport carts, parts, and equipment throughout the city. Responsibilities include completing cart repairs, exchanges, and deliveries; maintaining inventory levels; and supporting efficient field operations. This position is critical to minimizing service disruptions, improving response times, and ensuring Solid Waste teams have the tools needed to provide reliable service to residents.

In this role, you will:

  • Lift and empty heavy solid waste containers into disposal trucks; operate hydraulic compaction units; and wash trucks as needed

  • Assist with specialized collections, including dead animal removal, e-waste, and large-item pickup

  • Perform manual labor on construction, maintenance, and repair projects using hand tools and small power tools

  • Conduct pre-trip equipment inspections (e.g., fluid levels, leaks, hoses, belts, tire pressure, lights) and maintain tools and equipment

  • Set up and remove barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices

  • Perform exterior maintenance duties such as raking, pruning, watering, litter removal, and clearing dumpster areas

  • Complete seasonal work, including salting, sanding, and manual snow and ice removal

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, reliability, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Safe driving experience, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to perform physical work in various weather conditions are highly valued. The candidate should also demonstrate accountability, flexibility, and a willingness to learn cart maintenance and Solid Waste operations.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: None

  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience performing unskilled labor work.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
