Position Summary:

The role of the Utility 1 is to perform drop, investigation, and small project responsibilities along with physical labor tasks at construction sites in accordance with company and industry safety rules and operating procedures.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

The Utility 1 is a full-time (40 + hours per week), non-exempt/hourly position. Overtime work should be expected for this position.

Travel:

Travel is expected for this position. Valid California Driver’s License and Clean DMV is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Compensation Details:  $22/hour

The functions listed below are a portion of what is required for this position. The job functions will change along with location and may expand at any time. Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor on construction projects; perform manual work.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of drop, install and investigation practices and use of associated equipment
  • Assist in the loading/unloading of equipment and supplies needed for daily work assignments, setting-up of worksite traffic and safety controls and properly securing work area.
  • Hand dig with shovels, picks, digging bars to expose located utilities, access underground vaults and pedestals, and complete trenches.
  • Operate jackhammers, air knives, pneumatic boring equipment (compressors & missiles) and numerous other power tools.
  • Place conduit and/or cables in trenches, splice conduit sections (install couplers) as directed, pedestals, vaults, etc. to complete construction tasks.
  • Fully restore worksite at completion of daily work, refill trenches and potholes, tamp soil, replant any plants or shrubs that were disturbed during our construction, place asphalt or concrete on sidewalk where excavations have been performed.
  • When required and if appropriately licensed and authorized, drive or operate construction equipment used on the jobsite to complete daily work assignments
  • Clean and maintain all company vehicles and equipment assigned for use.
  • Capable of working in all temperatures and climates
  • Able to perform physical tasks for the entire assigned work shift
  • Willingness to work shifts as assigned, including daily overtime as necessary.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
  • Bring problems to the attention of the Foreman, Construction Supervisor, Construction Manager, Director, or Safety Director
  • Perform sewer lateral locating using appropriate detection equipment and methods to identify and mark the location of private and public sewer laterals.
  • Interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and construction plans to assist in accurate lateral identification.
  • Communicate findings clearly to construction teams, supervisors, and customers to ensure safe excavation and project planning.
  • Maintain accurate records of lateral locations and report discrepancies or issues to the Foreman or Construction Supervisor.
  • Ensure all sewer lateral locating activities comply with safety standards and local regulations.
  • All other duties as assigned or needed to complete the day to day operation of the department

Job Requirements:

  • Valid Class A CA Driver’s License and clean DMV record is a PLUS!
  • Successful completion of all Sonic trainings regarding safety and job duties
  • Successful completion of the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course
  • Knowledge of proper use of HDD equipment, HDD materials and supplies used in HDD and Underground construction work.
  • Some Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
    • Successful completion of First Aid and CPR once hired
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to lift 80 pounds or more, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency. Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt and other environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
  • Ability to work in current weather conditions including but not limited to extreme heat, rain, dust, and wind.
  • Ability to communicate with customer and management in fast paced environment to keep project moving
  • Experience operating an HDD drill or Locating equipment is a plus!

Daily driving is expected. The Construction crew is exposed to varying climates and elements, determined by Mother Nature. Extreme heat, rain, dust and wind are to be expected.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to sit and stand; talk or hear; reach with hands and arms; key/type. The employee is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to drive a vehicle.
