Job Summary

Urology Surgical Assistant, Days
*Full time; 6:30am-3pm (Monday-Friday)
*Call required
*Certification from National Surgical Assistants Association or the Association of Surgical Technologists or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required
*BLS (American Heart Assoc) required
*3-5+ years of current Surgical Tech experience preferred
*Urology experience preferred
*This position will not function as a normal Surgical Assistant. Will be responsible for managing internal urology service-line needs under direct supervision of the hiring manager, i.e., ordering, communication with reps, facilitating and coordinating service-line needs, communication with physician partners, ancillary departments—material management, SPD, and not limited to other tasks and duties. Will be required to scrub as needed.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of a surgical technology program

Licenses/Certifications: Certification from National Surgical Assistants Association or the Association of Surgical Technologists or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

Principal  Accountabilities

  • Assists physicians in performing surgical procedures by providing support such as: exposure, homeostasis, retracting tissues, clamping and tying vessels to control bleeding, keeping the operative site dry, closing the incision by applying sutures and wound dressings.

  • Assists in transporting patients when required.

  • Assists other members of the surgical team, including the anesthesiologist, anesthetist, operating room nurses and recovery room nurses as necessary.

  • Assists in preparing the operating room for cases.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
