The Department of Film, ELO, is the only university-level film school in Finland. It is a vital combination of innovative art academy and an active, practice-based and artistic research unit. It teaches all aspects of filmmaking and performance design as separate skill sets. Our faculty consists of international-level practicing filmmakers, scenographers and researchers.

University Teacher / Lecturer / University Lecturer in Film Directing

Your role and goals

The lecturer's teaching responsibilities encompass instructing on the fundamentals of film directing in the joint study modules of the bachelor's degree program, as well as in courses within the film directing major. Responsibilities include tutoring students, developing curriculum, supervising and evaluating bachelor's theses, and performing administrative tasks. The lecturer collaborates closely with the professors from the major and other educators in the Film degree program.

The Lecturer is primarily responsible for teaching the majority of film directing courses. This role involves overseeing course implementation and recruiting hourly-paid teachers and guest lecturers, for whom the Lecturer serves as supervisor. Teaching in the program typically takes place in small groups through lectures, practical exercises, workshops, and productions. The Lecturer must possess both the ability and willingness to engage in open and active interaction with students, guiding them in teaching situations while supporting their unique artistic development. Additional duties include participating in the student admissions process.

The Department of Film at Aalto University supports faculty in their artistic endeavors and offers unpaid leave to advance individual artistic careers.

Your experience and ambitions

A minimum of a master’s degree is required, along with directing experience in professional film and/or television drama productions, as well as the artistic merits and teaching experience appropriate to this role. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent collaboration skills. A commitment to advancing both teaching and the field is essential. Proficiency in Finnish and English is vital. A broad understanding of the film industry, an interest in research, and knowledge of Swedish are considered assets.
