The Department of Film, ELO, is the only university-level film school in Finland. It is a vital combination of innovative art academy and an active, practice-based and artistic research unit. It teaches all aspects of filmmaking and performance design as separate skill sets. Our faculty consists of international-level practicing filmmakers, scenographers and researchers.

We are seeking a fixed-term University Teacher for the Department of Film to cover a temporary vacancy.

The position is full-time and fixed term. A permanent Lecturer position is currently open, and the recruitment process is about to begin. This substitute position is needed until the permanent Lecturer has been selected (estimated contract duration 1 January–30 June 2026).

Overview

We are looking for a University Teacher to teach bachelor-level courses in the major in Film Directing. We seek a person with professional experience directing film and/or TV drama, as well as teaching experience. Teaching in the program takes place primarily in small groups through lectures, practical exercises, workshops and productions. The Lecturer must have both the skill and the desire for open and active interaction with students and must be able, in the teaching situation, to guide students in a way that supports their individual artistic orientation.

Responsibilities

The Lecturer teaches most of the film directing courses personally. They are responsible for the implementation of the courses and, when necessary, recruit hourly teachers and visiting lecturers, and act as their supervisor. The role also includes participation in student admissions.

Requirements

Applicants for the University Teacher in Film Directing must hold at least a master’s degree. In addition, professional experience in directing film and/or TV drama is required, as well as teaching experience and experience in guidance/advising at universities and/or in vocational education. Good skills in Finnish and English are essential.
