Job Description

Summary:

The Hollings Clinical Trials Office (CTO) oversees over 150 trials including cancer control trials sponsored under the NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). The Cancer Prevention and Control Program consists of 40 full members and many affiliate members, across a wide range of disciplines, expertise, and administrative departments across the Medical University of South Carolina. Program themes include a strong focus on 1) tobacco use and cessation, 2) cancer health disparities, 3) screening and early detection, and 4) cancer survivorship. This position will work with a wide range of CPC investigators to promote a robust and active cancer control portfolio of trials which meet the projected accrual goals.

It is important that the liaison can effectively communicate to internal and external stakeholders, health providers and patients/ community participants about HCC trial opportunities in a professional and culturally competent manner. The liaison will have a direct report to the CTO Administrative Director and will work closely with the HCC Program Leaders for Cancer Prevention and Control: Dr. Ashish Deshmukh and Dr. Tracy Smith, and the HCC Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE), led by Dr. Marvella Ford.

Responsibilities:

30% Trial Recruitment Tool Development and Consultation

This position will work closely with the Principal Investigators (PI) and study teams to develop and support trial study specific recruitment plans for cancer studies. This position is not intended to directly recruit participants for research studies, whether clinical trials or other, but will rather act as a subject matter expert in trial recruitment strategies and assist the team in the implementation and/or maintenance of the recruitment initiatives such as supporting advertising or marketing efforts, or implementation of information technology trial screening methods for enhancing enrollment plans.  Additionally, this position will support the HCC CTO to pilot and develop new clinical trial recruitment techniques. Examples of recruitment tools to be developed include electronic e-consent, medical record watchlists or trial matching, or process guidance for how to add new research subsites within the MUSC Regional Healthcare Network. The position may support the study team in setting up existing clinical trial recruitment techniques such as study subject stipend and reimbursement and assuring seamless provision of subject stipends after subject enrollment, or administratively supporting the PI and the HCC Communication leaders to develop new trial communication campaigns and materials to announce and market cancer trial activations or to facilitate the creation of new videoboards or news stories.

30% Study Recruitment Information Dissemination and Reporting

This position will prepare and maintain an up-to-date summary of the research portfolio across Cancer Prevention and Control and NCORP and other cancer studies (which may include professional brochures, videos, PowerPoint presentations, or 1pg study summaries), particularly those studies that involve clinical trials. This role will help ensure that HCC study webpages and study information within the HCC clinical trials mobile app are up to date and relevant. Under the direction of the COE leaders and CTO Administrative Director, this position may help connect PI’s and study teams to COE and facilitate trial information dissemination at community events. This may include the administrative coordination of distributing trial marketing material to COE leaders or manning information tables as directed by COE and PI. Quality assurance checks may be essential in verifying with PI’s that study status and study eligibility per the IRB approved trial are accurate within the mobile app, webpages, or other brochures and summaries. There is an expectation that the position maintains current knowledge of existing research studies, including meeting with separate investigators to identify their unique challenges and opportunities for improved community involvement. This position will work with study personnel and leverage the reporting from the clinical trials monitoring system (CTMS (e.g. OnCore)) to monitor metrics of study accrual at each milestone (screening, consent, enrollment, retention), to assess any potential biases that inhibit study enrollment (e.g., if any demographic subgroups differentially respond at any step of the study enrollment process). This position may also be responsible for the collection and recording of additional metrics along with the presentation of those metrics with COE, CPC/CTO leadership, and PIs so that leadership can effectively assess the impact of recruitment initiatives. The recording of metrics must be accurate and timely and effectively stored within the clinical trial management system (CTMS) database or other approved systems. The ability to utilize excel or other statistical programs will be essential as some analysis of recruitment performance metrics is needed.

20% Administrative and Special Project Duties

It is essential that this position demonstrate professional communication skills and is able to track and report on trial liaison activities to leadership. Regular attendance to update meetings and maintenance of workload trackers and agendas is expected. Special projects and grant opportunities in which this position will be involved in administrative support. Other potential responsibilities include the evaluation of study materials used to support education and training programs; participation in regular team meetings, continuing education, and peer activities. Other ad hoc assignments in support of HCC.

20% Study Community Outreach and Engagement

This position will work collaboratively and consult regularly with PIs, CTO and HCC COE faculty and staff to provide updates and develop strategies for optimizing engagement within and among underserved communities throughout the catchment area (South Carolina). This position may travel to support community events or projects to raise clinical research awareness throughout South Carolina and serve as a liaison to help potential study participants or referring providers find HCC clinical trial opportunities and triage specific requests for study information. This position will facilitate bi-directional community input for ongoing and emergent cancer research by helping PIs identify opportunities to serve community members in the catchment area including presentations that link research and community leaders, increase community health education or link medically underserved communities and HCC programs across South Carolina. This position may also provide administrative support for Cancer Prevention and Control, CTO or COE research retreats as they pertain to community stakeholders.
