Location: Evanston Hospital
Full Time (32 hours)
Hours: 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM (occasionally will be needed 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM) Weekends/Holidays required.
A Brief Overview:
Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides clerical support for assigned nursing unit or department. In doing so, transcribes physicians’ orders and enters into computer, schedules diagnostic tests and therapies for patients; assembles and maintains patients’ charts, answers telephone and intercom calls; provides routine information and relays calls and messages. The following are general characteristics of this job, although duties may vary by assigned unit or shift.
What you will do:
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. This includes knowledge of the physical and psychological needs of patients served and the ability to respond appropriately to those needs.
Answers telephone calls, responds to routine inquiries, and relays other calls and messages per Edward Hospital standards. Responds to patients’ intercom calls and notifies appropriate personnel of patients’ requests
Promotes patient satisfaction by greeting and directing patients, unit visitors, physicians and other hospital personnel, and maintaining a positive and courteous manner.
Assures rooms are ready for patient arrival and assists in checking in patients.
Admits and orients new patients per departmental procedure.
Assembles and maintains medical charts for unit patients. Disassembles and routes patient charts to appropriate departments upon discharge, transfer or as requested.
Processes physicians’ orders into computer with close review by the assigned RN, and notifies nursing personnel of orders requiring immediate attention.
Completes appropriate requisition forms and contacts other departments to schedule diagnostic tests, meals, therapies and so forth, consistent with physicians’ orders.
Requisitions and stores approved supplies and linen according to established procedures and maintains storage areas in an organized condition.
May maintain staff and physician schedules.
Types letters, reports, tables, forms and the like from rough drafts, handwritten notes, and/or report output. Proofs typed copy for typographical errors and submits items to supervisor for review. May take and distribute meeting minutes.
Sorts, classifies and files materials, catalogs, and/or records. Updates records and files as necessary.
Posts department information to records, logs and/or journals in accordance with specific instructions. Checks and verifies data appearing on forms and records and performs routine calculations.
Generates, reviews accuracy of, and distributes routine reports and lists. Collates and assembles documents for distribution.
May review unit staff time and attendance records.
Opens, sorts, and distributes department mail.
Performs related clerical duties such as scheduling meetings, filing, photocopying, faxing, completing charges, verifying midnight census, entering ADT/Census information, ordering routine unit supplies.
Responsible for transportation of court documentation as well as other confidential information to and from Edward Hospital.
Calls and participates in codes necessary to the unit’s and hospital’s safe operation.
Attends education in-service classes, unit meetings and the like as required.
What you will need:
Education, Experience and/or Skills Required:
One year of prior experience in producing business correspondence and documents, typing and filing
Proficiency in the use of personal computer software
Time management and organizational skills
A high level of customer service
Willingness to be trained in proper response to combative or hostile patients
Ability to maintain confidentiality of information
Education, Experience and/or Skills Preferred:
Knowledge in Microsoft Office software
Familiarity with basic medical terminology and hospital procedures
License/Certification Required:
Current CPR Certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross required
A valid driver’s license is required if the incumbent is selected to perform related duties at an off-site location. If the incumbent uses their personal vehicle, the incumbent must maintain automobile liability coverage as required by law and evidence of such coverage may be requested.
Work Environment:
The functional demands of the job are sedentary, requiring very light energy level.
