JOB DESCRIPTION:

CNA provides policyholders with a broad range of casualty solutions lines from small, guaranteed cost to large customized loss-sensitive primary & excess casualty programs for multiple industry segments including Construction, Financial Institutions, Healthcare, Hospitality, Life Sciences, Manufacturing, Professional Services, Real Estate, and Technology.  Coverages include:

The Underwriting Consulting Director role is part of the Global Casualty Product team responsible for the governance and oversight of the global casualty portfolio.   You will work closely with leaders across the enterprise to establish underwriting standards, guidelines, manuscript endorsements, forms and filings, pricing strategy, reinsurance usage, underwriting authority standards and the audit process. The position will work closely with Legal and Technology to ensure accuracy and compliance of forms and filings and work with Claims, Risk Control and Actuarial to analyze trends to promote profitable growth. 

The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of underwriting experience and strong coverage knowledge in these lines as well as expertise in creation and maintenance of product manuals and skill in assessing exposures to loss, loss analysis and pricing.  You will be responsible for the overall management, analysis and monitoring of a book of business of the highest complexity.  In conjunction with senior level management, you will work within the broadest limits of authority requiring the highest degree of technical complexity and coordination. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

1. Works with senior management approving underwriting language on the most complex underwriting risks employing advanced diagnostic and systematic analysis to assess acceptability. Develops specialized endorsement language for the most complex risks.

2. Establishes and maintains the infrastructure for product manuals, ensuring accuracy and timely updates to reflect current underwriting standards, regulatory requirements and product changes. Promotes consistency across casualty products and leads initiatives for manual content development and governance.

3. Evaluation and approval of appropriate pricing of the most complex risks based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.

4. Participates with senior management in the development and implementation of underwriting guidelines, policy, and manuscript endorsements. 

5. Interprets corporate strategies and initiatives to tailor the company's approach.

6. Analyzes quality, quantity, and profitability of the most complex risks underwritten.

7. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends where they may represent the company in industry trade groups.

8. Confident in freely shares knowledge and expertise with others, mentoring and guiding less experienced underwriters, and assisting in the development of underwriting training. 

9. Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.

2. Typically, a minimum ten years underwriting experience with proven track record of results.

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $97,000 to $189,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
