Undergraduate Academic Advising, Manager 1 (Newark Campus)

The Academic Advising office at The Ohio State University at Newark serves undergraduate students beginning their study in any of over 200 majors offered at Ohio State, including a limited number of majors that can be completed entirely at Newark. This Manager 1 position will serve as supervisor for 4-6 academic advisors at the Newark campus. In addition, this role will provide direct academic advising for a small roster of students in a subset of undergraduate majors.  

The advising manager should have broad knowledge of policies, processes and procedures in undergraduate advising and be able to support their reports in all advising situations. This role will provide ongoing coaching, goal setting, and performance management for direct reports. The Advising Manager 1 is expected to perform as a subject matter expert when identified as a resource for special projects or strategic requests. In addition to project development and deployment, responsibilities may include professional development for staff. This position will collaborate with the Advising Manager 2 in ongoing development and support of office operations.

The Advising Manager 1 advises students directly. The advising load is small relative to academic advisors but student advising duties may increase during peak scheduling periods. In this role, the Advising Manager 1 will assist students in navigating the university and make referrals to other university offices related to the student experience including academic, career, financial, psychological, etc. resources.   

Additional responsibilities include assisting with student orientation and possibly teaching lessons in a student survey course. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of academic advising services as well as a commitment to student development and a collaborative approach to student support services.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Master's Degree. 3 years of relevant experience required. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred.

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills; able to communicate ideas in a manner that adapts to the needs of students and other stakeholders including parents, faculty, partner units, etc.

  • Understands demographics of student population

  • Able to use strong relational skills such as active listening, interviewing/questioning techniques

  • Strong knowledge of academic advising, including general education and learning outcomes, enrollment plans, progress toward degree, changing demographics, etc.

  • Understands and follows FERPA Guidelines

  • 4-6 years of relevant experience

  • Knowledge and application of university's advising policies, such as drop deadlines, override requirements, petition process, faculty rules, registrar processes, etc.

Additional Information

The budget for this position is $51,500 - $67,250 annually. The offer for this position will be based on internal equity and the candidate's qualifications.
