About the Role

In this role, you will lead a South Africa-based editorial operations team responsible for delivering core UK analytical content and strategic initiatives at scale and pace. This is a delivery-focused managerial role, accountable for operational performance, efficiency, and quality across live, deadline-driven editorial workflows. You will work closely with UK and global stakeholders to meet defined commercial and delivery objectives, balancing quality, timeliness, capacity, and risk in a globally integrated operating environment.

The role reports to the Head of UK Analytical Editorial Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a South Africa–based editorial team delivering high-quality analytical content for Legal and Tax Markets portfolios and exam materials for Tolley Learning Academy, in line with agreed quality standards and delivery commitments.

  • Own end-to-end operational delivery, including production scheduling, workload and capacity planning, and execution against defined timelines, service levels, and business commitments.

  • Set clear performance expectations and manage delivery metrics, tracking productivity, throughput, quality, and risk via dashboards, and taking timely corrective action where standards or delivery are at risk.

  • Make informed trade-offs across quality, timeliness, capacity, and risk to ensure predictable, reliable delivery in a dynamic and demand-driven environment.

  • Drive continuous optimisation of digital and print editorial workflows, with a strong focus on simplification, scalability, repeatability, and sustainable ways of working.

  • Guide the effective and responsible use of technology, automation, and generative AI to improve efficiency and reliability, applying appropriate judgement, sequencing, and governance guardrails.

  • Build a flexible, cross-trained, and resilient team, capable of responding to changing priorities and production peaks, supported by regular coaching, performance management, and fair, timely handling of underperformance.

  • Operate as a collaborative enterprise partner, fostering a globally integrated team culture, working closely with the UK-based Analytical Editorial Operations Manager, and partnering with commercial, HR, recruitment, global operations, and technology stakeholders to deliver aligned outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years’ people-management experience preferred

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint); familiarity with project-management approaches (agile or waterfall); XML knowledge desirable.

  • Based in South Africa, with experience in publishing, content, or editorial operations highly desirable.

  • Strong communication and collaborative leadership skills, with the ability to work constructively across global, cross-functional teams while balancing team advocacy and organisational alignment.

  • Sound operational and organisational judgement, including effective prioritisation, deadline management, planning, and proactive stakeholder communication.

  • Business, commercial, and analytical acumen, with confidence using data, metrics, and performance reporting to support decision-making.

  • Process- and change-oriented mindset, with experience improving ways of working, using publishing systems and platforms, and supporting teams through transformation.
