Overview
The Truck Driver – Sanitation Special Services operates a city vehicle to perform specialized solid waste services, with primary responsibility for the removal of domestic and wildlife animal remains from public and private property within city limits. The position responds to dispatched service calls and exercises independent judgment in handling animal remains in accordance with established protocols. This position may also be assigned to other sanitation support functions outside of routine garbage and recycling collection.
Essential Functions
1 Responds to dispatched service requests for the removal of domestic and wildlife animals remains from public rights-of-way and private property, ensuring safe, sanitary, and respectful handling.
2 Applies appropriate handling and disposal protocols based on the type of animal involved, including distinguishing between domestic animals and wildlife and following applicable procedures for each.
3 Makes reasonable efforts to identify potentially owned animals through tags, microchip scanning when available, or other indicators, in accordance with departmental procedures.
4 Safely loads, transport, and disposes of animal remains using approved methods and designated facilities.
5 Operates assigned sanitation vehicles and related equipment necessary to perform special services functions.
6 Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and basic preventive maintenance checks, including fluids, tires, and safety equipment, to ensure safe operation.
7 Maintains accurate activity logs, mileage records, and service documentation to support operational tracking and accountability.
8 Communicates field conditions, unusual circumstances, or service issues to supervisors to support timely resolution.
9 May be assigned to additional sanitation support duties, including roll cart delivery and retrieval, minor cart or container damage repair teams, debris response, or other solid waste–related functions not involving primary garbage or recycling collection.
10 Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Knowledge of safety rules, health precautions, and sanitation practices applicable to solid waste and animal remains handling.
2 Knowledge of basic vehicle operation and preventive maintenance practices.
3 Ability to exercise sound judgment when determining appropriate handling procedures for different types of animals remains.
4 Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while responding to service calls.
5 Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, including outdoor work under varying weather conditions.
6 Ability to read and navigate maps or electronic routing tools depicting city streets and service locations.
7 Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to use common hand tools and equipment associated with sanitation services.
8 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
Experience
Two years of experience operating commercial or municipal vehicles or performing field-based sanitation, maintenance, or service work.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Texas Driver License.
Education
High School Diploma or GED.
