Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for operationalizing and evaluating the trauma PIPS plan in collaboration with the Trauma Program Coordinator and Trauma Medical Director.
  • Ensures the trauma program meets state regulatory and American College of Surgeons verification standards for performance improvement and patient safety.
  • Oversees the collection, tracking, and benchmarking of trauma PI issues related to patient care, and operation and system development. Maintains the tracking system for case reviews and performance improvement reports.
  • Participates in assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of processes and education for process improvement in the care of the injured patient.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the trauma registry and processes, National Trauma Data Dictionary, and ACS Trauma Quality Improvement initiatives, benchmarking, and reports.
  • Collaborates with trauma registry staff to integrate registry data in the PI process.
  • Serves as co-chair of the Trauma Performance Improvement Subcommittee. 
  • Provides trauma PI updates to the Trauma Multidisciplinary PIPS committee and other committees as directed.
  • Collaborates with members of the trauma committee to identify, implement, and evaluate education programs for staff caring for trauma patients.
  • Assists with community and hospital outreach programs as needed.
  • Attends at least 80% of monthly trauma meetings and state Performance Improvement and Data Management meetings.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required

  • Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification.
  • Trauma Outcomes Performance Improvement Course within 12 months of hire.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course within 12 months of hire.
  • Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) Abbreviate Injury Scaling Course within 12 months of hire.

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

Experience Required

  • Typically requires 3 years of nursing experience in one of the following areas: pre-hospital, emergency, critical care or trauma care.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required

  • Strong knowledge with all aspects of trauma care from prehospital and hospital settings.
  • Understands quality care management processes and practices.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) or similar products.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

-Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently throughout the workday.

-Position requires use of foot pedals on carts or machines.

-Must be able to:

  • lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
  • lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
  • carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.

-Must be able to:

  • push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.

-Must have functional vision, speech, and hearing.

-May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids; therefore, personal protective equipment must be worn as necessary.
