Job Description:

Do you want to play a direct role in helping the staff of Iowa’s local transportation agencies work more effectively and efficiently as they build, operate, and maintain their roadway infrastructure? Are you motivated by serving the training and technical assistance needs of those who directly and indirectly support communities across Iowa?

If so, the Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) at the Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is seeking applicants for a Transportation Training Specialist! LTAP has a long history of working with a variety of partners to support local transportation agency staff and those who assist them. LTAP delivers training and education in a wide range of areas, including work zone safety, flagging operations, winter maintenance, motor grader operation, and more.

This position will be classified as a Learning and Development Specialist II.

What You'll Do:

  • Identify and recommend training for local, county, and state transportation staff.

  • Develop and deliver training materials for in‑person and virtual outreach events and workshops.

  • Create and share training and outreach resources with local transportation agencies.

  • Coordinate agendas, budgets, and logistics for training events.

  • Serve as the primary contact for outreach events and training sessions.

  • Contribute to InTrans outreach/service/research projects as needed.

  • Prepare reports and updates for principal investigators.

  • Write technical content for newsletters and related publications.

  • Communicate with transportation officials on issues related to traffic planning, safety, design, and operations.

  • Respond to assistance requests from transportation officials.

  • Research and provide guidance on technical questions.

  • Represent LTAP at professional meetings and conferences.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development.

In-state travel will be involved in this role.

This is a one-year, fixed term position with the opportunity for renewal.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Iowa LTAP is located within the Institute for Transportation (InTrans) at Iowa State University. InTrans is an $18 million research organization that includes seven centers and seven programs. InTrans conducts transportation-related research and outreach, and addresses the education and workforce development needs of future transportation professionals. LTAP has existed, in one form or another, for more than 40 years.  Its mission is to foster a safe, efficient, and environmentally sound transportation system by improving the skills and knowledge of local transportation providers through training, technical assistance, and technology transfer.
