Job Description Summary:

Under limited supervision, the OSMP Crew Lead role provides support and leadership to execute trail program objectives as well as department wide plans that support all charted land uses and open space purposes. Crew leads are responsible for field and project management, skills development, and administrative and logistical support of their crew and overall trails program. The Trail Crew Lead is expected to perform and guide others in trail construction and maintenance under minimal supervision. As a Crew Lead, you will coordinate and direct work with other agency partners such as OSMP Jr. Rangers, conservation corps crews, volunteers, and other groups and individuals assigned to trail projects. This position requires hiking up to 10 hours per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, and working outside in inclement weather and in mountainous terrain.

Job Description:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES                 

  • Coordinates daily tasks of crews to complete routine maintenance, repair and construction on trails and related structures and facilities

  • Provides field support, training, and comprehensive performance evaluations to crew

  • Conducts daily safety briefings and completes safety logs.

  • Stays engaged and motivates others with the task at hand for up to 10 hours at a time, especially when tasks are repetitive and physical in nature.

  • Maintains regular communication on status of projects with project managers and supervisors

  • Develops and facilitates on-the-job tool training, leadership, and team development activities to crews and other agency partners

  • Delivers instruction on specialized skills such as rigging, dry stone construction, carpentry, and mechanized equipment.

  • Openly shares successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth.

  • Records daily work completed using asset management software

  • Takes before and after photos of projects

  • Communicates project timeline, deliverables, and progress to project managers and supervisors

  • Creates end of project reports that highlight challenges and work completed

  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents.

  • Ensures safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.

  • Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.

  • Knows all policies inclusive of safety and reporting any damage or infractions.

  • Must hold and maintain a valid drivers' license.

  • Must successfully pass a background check before first day of work and maintain acceptable screening.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to operate and use specialized equipment including trail dozers, excavators, power carriers, gas powered rock drills/breakers, winch and rigging equipment, chainsaws, grinders and sharpening tools, etc.

  • Skills and proficiency using of MS Office, ArcGIS or field data collection software.

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation ecology, recreation resource management, environmental study/science, natural resource management, parks and protected area management, human dimensions, construction, project management or related field.

  • Certified in Advanced First Aid.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Two (2) years of experience of work in natural resources or land management with one (1) season of experience supervising work crews completing natural resource management or land management field tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS   

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting and using hand and power tools in trail work. Routinely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing 50 pounds, and up to 150 pounds (or more) with assistance while hiking on rough terrain. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.

  • Work Environment: Works in an outdoor environment year-round. Potential exposure to dangerous wildlife (e.g., rattlesnakes, mountain lions, stinging insects), toxic chemicals (paint), dangerous plants (poison ivy) and dangerous weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, lightning). Also works in an indoor setting at a desk.

  • Machines and Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators, cell phones, and copy machines; vehicles including four-wheel drive vehicles and pulling a trailer; a range of relevant and appropriate tools and equipment.
