This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge and experience to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.
We are seeking a Traffic Engineer II to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will have a background in roadway design with preferred experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design, roadway lighting, or electrical systems. We welcome applicants from a variety of engineering disciplines who are eager to contribute to dynamic, real-world projects.
What You'll Do:
- Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
- Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
- Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.
- Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
- Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or
- Master’s degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience
What You'll Design and Deliver:
- Designs and develops electrical and communication systems for transportation projects, including conduit systems, pull boxes, signal interconnect, fiber optic networks, and related infrastructure for DOT and transit agency clients.
- Prepares traffic signal design plans, intersection control evaluations, and signal timing optimization for state DOT and local transit corridor projects.
- Supports ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) design, including field device layouts, communications architecture, and integration with Traffic Management Center (TMC) systems.
- Develops design plans and specifications for highway lighting, traffic control devices, dynamic message signs (DMS), closed-circuit television (CCTV), detection systems, and associated electrical systems.
- Assists in traffic operations analysis and optimization studies, including signal coordination, adaptive signal control, corridor studies, and level-of-service evaluations.
- Coordinates with state DOTs, transit agencies, and local municipalities on project requirements, design standards, and plan submittals.
- Supports preparation of construction documents, technical specifications, and bid packages for electrical and traffic signal systems in compliance with MUTCD, AASHTO, and agency-specific standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with electrical and communication systems design in a DOT, transit, or municipal transportation environment.
- Familiarity with traffic signal design software such as Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, or Vistro for signal timing and optimization.
- Knowledge of MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), AASHTO standards, and state DOT design guidelines.
- Experience with ITS devices and systems, including CCTV, DMS, vehicle detection, emergency vehicle preemption (EVP), and communications infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Transit Signal Priority (TSP) design and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor projects.
- Understanding of NEMA or Type 2070 controller standards and traffic signal cabinet design.
- Experience reading and producing electrical plans, wiring diagrams, and communication network drawings.
What We Prefer:
- Master's degree in Engineering
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
- Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD

The approximate pay range for Maryland is $78,138.74 - $117,208.11. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
