About the Position

We are looking for a talented Trades Specialist to join our Operations & Maintenance Team and help protect and enhance communities across Maricopa County. In this hands-on role, you’ll use your expertise in carpentry, steel fabrication, and welding to maintain and repair critical Flood Control infrastructure. Your work helps maintain community spaces that residents depend on every day. From scenic hiking trails and bike paths to open recreational areas, our projects create safe, functional infrastructure while providing residents with beautiful outdoor spaces to enjoy year-round.

We Require

  • Two years of fabrication and welding experience

  • One year of construction experience

  • High school diploma or GED

Other Requirements

Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

We Also Value

  • Knowledge of various tools, materials, fabricating, and welding techniques applied in a metal fabrication shop, and methods, practices, tools, and materials used in a variety of skilled trades to perform maintenance, repair, and construction work

  • AWS Welding Certification(s) in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW or equivalent

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions, and general procurement processes

  • Skill in the safe and efficient operation of a variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles

  • Skill to interpret and work from sketches, blueprints, maps, and plans

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Job Contributions

  • Design, fabricate, and weld a variety of fixtures for the Flood Control District (FCD), including gates, panel fences, trash racks, bollards, aluminum boxes, antennas, etc.

  • Repair, install, and/or perform maintenance of FCD fixtures and structures

  • Operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and various hand and power tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures

  • Responsible for supporting inventory management operations, including ordering, picking up, and delivering materials, supplies, tools, and equipment to ensure efficient workflow and operational support

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, maps, and calculate size requirements

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

Working Conditions

  • Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly

  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration

  • Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties & responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware

The position generally conducts business out in the field, utilizing various hand tools for numerous construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and a range of electric and hand tools. Familiarization with four-wheel-drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be required from time to time.

Protective Equipment Required

Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County and may include General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform daily duties. This includes but is not limited to safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high visibility vests, eye protection, durable pants such as jeans.
