TRADE COMPLIANCE OFFICER

The role

The Trade Compliance Officer will work with the Trade Compliance Manager to support managers and other personnel within allocated business lines to comply with Export Controls.

The business line, through the relevant customer Project Manager (PM), has responsibility and accountability for Export Control compliance.  The Trade Compliance Officer provides operational and administrative support, assisting the PM to coordinate and manage activities involving or affected by Export Controls.

As a subject matter expert in Export Control regulations, applicable export authorisations and corporate policies and procedures, the Trade Compliance Officer is the primary point of contact for the business line

Further, the successful candidate will:

For each allocated business line:

  • Understand and promote the obligations that Export Controls and Saab’s related Export Control processes place on staff and projects, in particular those processes that directly relate to projects.
  • Liaise with and provide advice and information to Project, Engineering and Sustainment Managers (PMs), Project Engineering Managers as needed to support Saab’s compliance on all matters regarding Export Control.
  • Assist the PM to check all project data releases against Export Control obligations (including validity, currency and applicability of authorisations and accuracy of labels/markings) prior to release from Saab.
  • As part of the Trade Compliance function, liaise with stakeholders to ensure that the processes allow data releases to occur in a timely manner and do not create bottlenecks for the projects.
  • Assist the PMs to manage new authorisations or amendments from the Commonwealth or other partners, including managing introduction of agreements/authorisations into projects, including communication to team members.
  • Ensure project-specific Export Control authorisations and licenses are regularly reviewed and kept up to date.
  • Assist the PMs to ensure information that is subject to Export Control is managed and stored in accordance with the required policies and procedures.
  • Assist the PMs to ensure staff have completed Saab processes (eg eligibility checks and “sign off” by individual staff members) for access under Export Control authorisations and licences required for projects.
  • Conduct Export Control eligibility checks and “sign off” processing, as required for projects.
  • Work with PMs to ensure alignment across multiple platforms, and consistency of approach within each business line and (where practical) across Saab.
  • Assist with audits of projects to ensure compliance.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9-day fortnight and part time will be considered for this role.

The role is open for locations in South Australia, WA and VIC, with preference in candidates from SA

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • At least 1 year working with Defence Industry - Export Control compliance, preferably including Australian and US (FMS, ITAR) export control laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify risks, recommend and implement solutions in a timely manner.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Well-developed interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A demonstrable aptitude for internal and external customer liaison.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting customer requirements and meeting time critical deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, and also within a team environment, and to foster cooperation within and between teams.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to develop creative and innovative solutions.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work with a variety of business tools (eg: MS Office suite, JIRA, SharePoint).
  • Diploma (or higher) qualifications in Business, Risk Management, Compliance, Project Management, Law or related disciplines (Desirable)

As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Citizenship and Australian Defence Security Clearance to baseline/NV1/NV2 level or have the ability to gain one. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
