Job Description:  

The person hired for the position of Tool & Die Maker will work at our Monroe, NC location.

The Tool & Die Maker must be able to work with others to troubleshoot production concerns and be skilled in building & repairing tooling fixtures & dies. Provides timely, clear, detailed communication to production and maintenance department supervision regarding the status of any production or facility support equipment issues.   Works as a member of an across shift team to execute projects throughout the facility

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build, repair, and modify tooling, dies, and fixtures in accordance with established methods and procedures
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to produce precision components within tight tolerances
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC and manual machining equipment including mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses
  • Program CNC equipment using CAM software (e.g., Gibbs CAM) as needed
  • Perform heat treating processes and assemble hardened components into completed tooling
  • Inspect and verify tooling to ensure proper function and compliance with manufacturing requirements
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, engineering, and production teams to optimize tooling performance and support production needs
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, quality, cost, and delivery
  • Assist with installation, modification, and documentation of equipment, including preventive maintenance (PM) procedures and spare parts identification
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to tooling, equipment, and processes
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while operating equipment
  • Support and maintain 7S/lean workplace organization standards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned


To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Tool & Die Journeyman certification OR Associate’s Degree in Machine Tool Technology (or related field)
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience as a Tool & Die Maker in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience using hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges

Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience as a Tool & Die Maker in a manufacturing or production environment
  • Advanced experience operating CNC equipment including milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and drill presses
  • Experience programming CNC machines using CAM software such as Gibbs CAM or similar systems
  • Demonstrated ability to build, troubleshoot, and repair complex tooling, dies, and fixtures with tight tolerances
  • Strong blueprint reading and interpretation skills, including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Experience with heat treating processes and tool steel properties
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve tooling performance and production efficiency
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and equipment documentation
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement initiatives (safety, quality, cost, delivery)
  • Familiarity with 7S and lean manufacturing principles

 All candidates must successfully complete the 3M Maintenance Testing Selection Battery (MTSB) as a condition of consideration for employment.

Pay Transparency: 

The pay  for this position is $35.49/hr. This targeted compensation range represents a good faith estimate and can vary based on factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
