Job Description

The Tool Designer is responsible for the design, modification, and continuous improvement of thermoforming tooling used in medical packaging production. This role supports new product development, engineering change execution, and production efficiency through CAD design, prototype and production tooling development, and ongoing optimization of existing tools. The Tool Designer works closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Process Engineering, and internal tool shop to ensure tooling meets performance, quality, and regulatory requirements.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

Tool Design & Development

  • Design thermoforming tooling (prototype and production) for medical packaging applications
  • Create and maintain 2D and 3D CAD models (tool components, assemblies, layouts)
  • Support prototype tooling builds, trials, and iterations for new products
  • Transition prototype tooling into robust, repeatable production tooling
  • Ensure tooling designs meet forming, trimming, cooling, and material performance requirements

Engineering Change & Work Order Execution

  • Execute Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) related to tooling modifications, upgrades, and corrections
  • Support Work Orders (WOs) for tooling builds, repairs, and improvements
  • Maintain accurate documentation and revision control within engineering systems
  • Coordinate tooling changes with Manufacturing, Quality, and Validation teams

Production Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Troubleshoot tooling-related production issues (forming defects, cycle time, scrap, wear)
  • Identify and implement efficiency improvements on existing tooling and legacy projects
  • Support line trials, process validations, and first-article runs

Collaboration & Interaction

  • Work with internal stakeholders (Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Quality, Tooling) to ensure tooling aligns with process capability and product requirements
  • Interface with internal tool shop for design reviews, fabrication, and revisions
  • Review supplier drawings and tooling builds for compliance to design intent

Documentation & Compliance

  • Create and maintain tooling drawings, BOMs, and specifications
  • Support documentation required for medical device quality systems (ISO 13485 / FSSC 22000 regulated environment)
  • Ensure tooling designs support cleanroom, traceability, and validation requirements

WHAT WE VALUE

  • The ability to read, comprehend, and transmit complicated and detailed instructions from prints, conceptual samples and ideas.
  • A comprehensive understanding of machining, tool fabrication methods and CAD equipment and operation.
  • Minimum of five years job related experience in tool design and tool fabrication.
  • Proficient and demonstrated use of SolidWorks/CAD Software.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge required including knowledge and understanding of MS Office, SAP production reporting system.
  • Able to remain detail orientated while meeting critical deadlines with changing priorities.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong work ethic, reliable, trustworthy, has the capacity and willingness to learn, can contribute new ideas, respect their coworkers and understand the importance of working together as a team.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere, creating and maintaining a positive work environment while having dialogue with internal and external customers.

Compensation

The starting salary for this position is expected to be between $64,700 to $80,900; however, base pay offered may vary within the full salary range $64,700 to $97,100 depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay information is based on national averages and a geographic differential may be applied based on work location. Position may also be eligible for Amcor’s Management Incentive Plan / Sales Incentive Plan, which is an annual bonus program based on business and individual performance, as well as medical coverage and other health and welfare benefits.
