Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.As part of a hardworking team of specialists and engineers, you will provide structural analysis and design support for test equipment, tooling, ground support equipment (GSE), and other hardware for various spaceflight systems. You will perform structural analysis on test tooling, GSE, and other test equipment and support structures; review and provide assessment of internally designed and vendor-produced designs and analysis; and provide guidance on structural integrity requirements for test tooling, structural design consultation, and structural guidance with designers and vendors.
You will support Test and GSE Leads by carrying out structural design and analysis activities in accordance with Blue Origin and national consensus standards and complete tasks including:
Strength checks using classical hand calc methods as well as finite element analysis (FEA) for tooling and test equipment
Analyzing and documenting structural margins in analysis reports
Development of software tools and templates (Excel, Mathcad, MATLAB, Python, etc.) to assess failure modes and support the detailed analysis and optimization of test structures
Documentation and/or review of stress analysis to support engineering drawings / documents release
Improving enterprise analysis capabilities such as creating process automation tools for model creation, strength checks, and analysis report generation
Provide guidance on system/part development and trade studies regarding structural integrity and identify opportunities for safety and cost improvements.
Providing technical guidance on design concepts balancing risk, cost, and performance
Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget and technical status
Supporting other teams and team members with inputs for design development, analysis and trade studies
We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
B.S. degree in engineering and 2+ years of experience in structural analysis of large tooling and/or structures such as aircraft, spacecraft, automotive, or oil and gas
Experience in the creation and validation of finite element models (FEMs) and use of analysis tools (e.g. HyperMesh, FEMAP, Patran, Ansys, or Abaqus)
Demonstrative experience of FEM modeling techniques (boundary conditions, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, etc.)
Ability to generate free-body diagrams to calculate internal loads and reaction forces, and help simplify and idealize structural problems of varying complexity
Bolted joint hand calculations (bolt preload, joint stiffness, shear-tension interaction, insert pull-out, etc.)
Solid foundation in mechanics of materials and structures load path definition
Experience performing stress analysis of metallic and/or composite structures (skin-stringer, fittings, sandwich panels, etc).
Analysis of stability critical structures (local buckling phenomenon, global buckling, crippling)
Experience with classical and aerospace analysis methods (Bruhn, Niu, Roark, Blodgett, Mark’s Shigley, etc.)
Mesh generation (ex: mid-surfacing) and understanding of element types (quad4, tet4 vs. tet10, RBE2 vs RBE3, hex8, hex20, etc.)
Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
Fatigue or damage tolerance and crack growth (hand calcs, NASGRO, VCCT, etc);
Experience with dynamics such as modal analysis for vibe and shock test fixtures, etc.
