The Opportunity

The College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University–Worldwide Campus (ERAU-W) seeks a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Human Factors (Ph.D. required). This is a fully remote online position with no relocation required; faculty travel at least once per year is required to attend mandatory college meetings and events.


Candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Ergonomics, Biomechanics, Human Computer Interaction, Applied Psychology, Industrial Psychology, or related disciplines, and possess a demonstrated competency in human factors-related studies and practices. Candidates with demonstrated academic, industry, and/or government experience related to fields in human factors with demonstrated activities in human cognitive, psychological, and/or physical performance; human-system interface design; human machine teaming; and related skills will be given preference.


Position Summary
This is a tenure track faculty position within the Department of Human Factors, Safety, and Social Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences – Worldwide Campus. The position is primarily teaching-focused, with responsibilities supporting undergraduate and graduate programs in Human Factors and related disciplines.


Faculty in this role contribute to high-quality online instruction, curriculum development, and program support aligned with Embry-Riddle’s mission to prepare students for applied, operational, and industry-relevant careers. This position emphasizes applied expertise and the integration of real-world human factors practice into the learning environment.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Human Factors and related areas in online modalities (asynchronous and/or synchronous/EagleVision)

  • Maintain a standard teaching load consistent with Worldwide faculty expectations (typically ~24 credit hours annually / ~8 courses per year)

  • Contribute to course development, updates, and continuous improvement, including integration of emerging topics (e.g., human-machine teaming, AI, HCI)

  • Support program-level initiatives such as assessment, accreditation (e.g., HFES, ABET where applicable), and curriculum alignment

  • Engage in student support, mentoring, and retention efforts in an online learning environment

  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities

  • Maintain engagement with professional practice, industry trends, and/or applied research relevant to human factors

The Department of Human Factors, Safety and Social Sciences serves as the home for the MS in Human Factors and the MS in Occupational Safety Management; the BS in Human Factors Psychology; the BS in Safety Management; Minors in Economics, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and Occupational Safety and Health; and provides foundational economics, psychology, and safety courses that support general education requirements and prerequisites to other Worldwide degree programs.
 
The college also delivers the general education program to all Worldwide Campus students, providing over 2,000 sections annually, with a focus on developing students’ capacity in critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, communication, scientific literacy, cultural literacy, technological literacy, and collaboration. The Worldwide Campus has an enrollment of more than 23,000 students, delivering courses globally online via Canvas, synchronously via EagleVision to both homes and classrooms, face-to-face at over 130 locations, and in a blended format.

Qualifications

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Ergonomics, Applied Psychology, or a closely related field

  • Demonstrated ability to teach or support instruction in human factors-related topics

  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage diverse, distributed student populations in an online environment

  • Evidence of applied or practical experience in human factors, human performance, or human-systems integration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in online or hybrid modalities (e.g., asynchronous, EagleVision, or equivalent platforms)

  • Professional experience in government, military, aerospace, industry, or applied human factors settings

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:

o   Human-machine teaming / human-autonomy interaction

o Human-AI interaction and decision support systems

o   Cognitive engineering and decision making

o   User experience (UX) / human-computer interaction (HCI)

o   Safety, human performance, or system design in operational environments

  • Experience with curriculum development, course design, or program-level contributions

  • Engagement with professional organizations (e.g., HFES) or applied research initiatives
