Job Summary
The Telecom Technician Apprentice II is a 2nd-level apprentice position to gain practical work experience in the telecommunications field. The Apprentice II will assist or perform entry to basic level installation, maintenance, repair or replacement, testing, and inspection of various Telecommunications equipment, systems, and infrastructure. This role will work to gain knowledge and understanding of various Telecommunications technologies, business processes, and business partner requirements; and will work to gain knowledge of emerging technologies. The Apprentice II will perform these tasks under immediate or general supervision according to the task level and will adhere to standard practices and procedures.Job Description
What You'll Need:
Perform entry- to basic-level installation, acceptance testing, and documentation for telecommunications equipment and systems; may perform higher-level tasks for training or as assigned.
Troubleshoot, test, maintain, and repair electronic and optical equipment, infrastructure, and systems at an entry- to basic-level.
Maintain accurate records, drawings, test reports, and asset documentation for all work performed.
Inspect, maintain, and ensure compliance of test instruments, tools, automotive equipment, and personal protective/safety gear.
Read, interpret, and update electrical/electronic prints, wiring diagrams, and telecom asset records.
Operate hand and power tools, test instruments, and job-specific equipment necessary to complete assignments safely and effectively.
Provide guidance, on-the-job training, and assistance to employees in lower classifications as requested or assigned.
Follow all Company safety rules, operating procedures, NERC CIP requirements, and environmental compliance practices.
Respond to emergency callouts and participate in incident response as required.
Perform essential duties identified in lower-level Telecom Technician job descriptions and other duties as assigned.
Complete all required and assigned training on schedule.
Technical Knowledge Areas (must achieve working knowledge / entry-level competency in at least one area as assigned)
Station data networks for transmission and distribution, SCADA, distribution automation, smart grid, and utility telecom integration.
Telecom voice and data systems supporting generation and renewable facilities.
Transport systems including microwave radio, fiber optic transport, and other wired/wireless transport technologies.
Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems: P25 site electronics, mobile radio installation/support/programming, and RF antenna systems.
Fiber optic cabling: splicing, testing, termination, and connectorization methods.
AC/DC electrical power fundamentals for distribution and transmission stations, including basic circuits, components, and safety.
Telecom wiring and cabling installation methods and industry-standard practices.
Network devices and architectures: routers, switches, wireless access points, and related networking equipment.
Infrastructure and site support systems: DC rectifiers/chargers, battery backups, UPS, generators, transfer panels, HVAC, grounding, security/monitoring, shelters, towers, and antenna systems.
Specialized support for control/dispatch centers, customer call centers, data centers, and other critical facilities.
What We Are Looking For:
Associate degree, or equivalent 2-year technical degree, in electrical engineering technology, electronic technology, or related technology field; or military training/experience in related technology field; or High school diploma with a minimum 1 year of related work experience or industry knowledge.
Must demonstrate knowledge of entry to basic level technical support skills equivalent to a Telecom Technician Apprentice III and have a minimum of 1 year of technical work experience in addition to education requirement.
For internal candidates (AEP Employees) Only: Must have a minimum of 1 year of satisfactory work experience, equivalent to, or as a Telecom Technician Apprentice III. Must have successfully completed all required training for the previous job level; and demonstrated/successfully tested the knowledge, skills, and capabilities required of an experienced Telecom Technician Apprentice III.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

A strong electronics / telecommunications aptitude is desired and essential to success.
Overnight travel and daily travel for work as required.
Be adaptable to work schedules and priorities that may change.
Be available for call-out and planned overtime as necessary to support our 24x7 operation.
Demonstrate computer and application skills needed to perform assigned Telecom work and documentation. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
Physical demand level is Heavy, and may include lifting, carrying, and installing/removing heavy items up to 60 lbs. such as electronic and optical equipment, racks, test equipment, tools, cables and terminals, and other items required to support projects and operational activities at all job locations.
